Burned through some more backlog this week, though I did watch some pretty good ones in the process.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – It’s not a bad action romantic comedy, definitely better than some of the others in the genre. There’s solid chemistry between Jolie and Pitt, and enough action for us guys. I think they would have been better served exploring their suburban life a little more, as I think there was more potential than what they developed. It seemed the ending was left a little open-ended, so I guess there’s still some likelihood for a sequel. Also, Vince Vaughn needed more screen time. You can pick this up in many bargain Blu-ray bins for $5, and it’s certainly worth that. The A/V is quite good for a 6+ year old transfer, too.
6/10
The Usual Suspects (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – This one has been on my radar for quite some time, as I like Singer’s work, and it’s received much praise. I thought it was an excellent watch, and is definitely a movie I would like to watch again. Towards the end I thought I had everything figured out, only to have my assumptions flipped over. It gets a definite recommendation to fans of Guy Ritchie and Tarantino.
7.5/10
Life of Pi (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Not one I was really too excited to watch, but when I found it for $5 at a Blu-ray bin in Wal-Mart, I didn’t think I could pass it up. I expected a visual treat, which it certainly was, but I wasn’t expecting such a well developed and engaging story. I did have a hard time watching some of the animal scenes (1000x more pity and sympathy for animals than humans), but other than that, I really enjoyed it. It’s a spectacle to watch, but there’s a good movie under there, too.
7/10
The Heat (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I have to confess I enjoyed this more than I would have expected. I generally like buddy cop movies, and I see this as a worthy entry into the genre. Bullock and McCarthy work very well opposite another, even if the story is clichéd and predictable. It maintains a steady stream of humor, with no real hilarious moments, though; definitely worth a rental at least.
6.5/10
Cyborg (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – It wasn’t bad in a simplistic, action movie sort of way, but it was pretty rough around the edges. Some of the special effects are right up there with the worst I’ve ever seen, and the though the antagonist, Fender, has a certain intimidation factor, he has to be the most one-dimensional villain ever. It’s watchable for those of us who like action movies, but everyone else is just going to find it laughable.
5/10
The Kingdom (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – Most all of Peter Berg’s movies are good, but just miss being really good, and this is no exception. It has a strong cast, but I think it makes light of some situations that are a lot more convoluted and complicated than shown here. It does have some strong action scenes, and the interplay between the four F.B.I. agents is a strong point too. It’s a good movie about the trials between the Western and Eastern cultures, but don’t expect it to be some revelatory tale.
6.5/10
Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I haven’t read the YA novel that this is based upon, and if the movie is any indicator, I probably never will. This is an obvious attempt to emulate the Twilight series, so if you didn’t like those, you’ll really hate this. I thought it had a decent premise, and some of the action sequences were fairly well developed, but there’s of course way too much added drama and romance for me. I think only the most ardent followers of the series will take much from it.
4/10
Saving Mr Banks - 7/10 Though this isn't the type of movie I normally see, it was pretty good.
Anchorman 2 - 6/10 It was ok. But it seemed like they were trying to hard to be better than the first movie. I thought the first Anchorman was a lot better than this one.
I, Frankenstein - Not to good either 6/10.
Last Stand - Small town sheriff Arnold! 6/10
Quote by Bubbles:
Two Christian Bale movies. Two movies with the word American in it. I liked the movie, and it was definitely entertaining to watch. Christian Bale's acting in it is funny in a kind of strange way, which I'm sure was deliberate, given the character.
Me and one of my friends were talking the other day, and we reached the conclusion that any movie title that starts with 'American' is good.
American Beauty
American Gangster
American Graffiti
American History X
American Hustle
American Pie
American Psycho
I think they're on to something!
amazing piece of movie making. Classic lines car chase & music
