Timeless classic from Jim Henson.
I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – This is one of the rare cases where I enjoyed the sequel better than the original. This is especially odd with horror movies in the slasher sub genre. Maybe I was just more in the mood for it this time than when I watched its predecessor, but I didn’t think it was a bad movie. Having watched the series (excluding the direct-to-DVD release I’ll never touch), I can definitely say it’s inferior to Scream, which it obviously tries to emulate. Scream went for the self-aware, tongue in cheek sort of humor that really set it apart from others, whereas this is just a basic teen slasher series. I think they made a good decision with the setting for this one, but it still lacked for kills; just when someone was about to get butchered, the screen would go away in a different direction. Hewitt has always been a crush of mine, so getting to see her strut around in a bathing suit is also a major plus. All in all, it’s not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but there are worse ways to kill 95 minutes or so.

American Hustle (Theater, 1st viewing) – I had some concern about this, as I wasn’t crazy about Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook, which received much praise. I wasn’t let down this time, though. This is right up there with recent releases for me, in terms of sheer entertainment value and acting – if Bale doesn’t received at least a nomination it will be a crime. It does a much better job of mixing comedy and drama than SLP did in my opinion. Outside of the Marvel/DC films, this is the best theatrical release I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in quite some time.

Company Men (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – It’s a shame this didn’t receive a wider release, as it’s a well constructed and acted film. You may have a hard time relating to the plight of most of the characters, but Affleck, Cooper, Jones all lend a strong human element to their parts. It’s not a movie all will enjoy, as it’s quite dry (not necessarily boring, though), so approach with caution.

Beautiful Creatures (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Didn’t know much about this going in, other than it’s an adaptation of a popular YA novel. From what I understand, it mimics other popular YA series’ a good deal, but since I’ve seen very few of them, I thought it was a decent movie. I did feel it was a little overlong, but not to the point of being too plodding. It is a little predictable, but there’s a decent twist towards the end that caught me off guard.

Boogie Nights (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – PTA isn’t one I mention in my favorite directors discussion, as I’ve now only seen two of his movies. I enjoyed this more than There Will Be Blood, and it definitely motivates me to watch the rest of his films. It’s hard to make a movie about the porn industry, and it not be solely about porn, but I think he was successful in making it more than just about sex. The cast turns in a top-tier performance as a whole, and the 150 minute runtime zooms by..
