Honestly it can greatly differ from one shop to another. I have been going to the same guy for about 2 years and I get'em for pretty cheap. The standard charge is about $100 per hour with a minimum of $50.00. Even though these are the standard charges some shops will rape you in price while others can be cheaper. Most of the time you get what you pay for but in my case since I have gone to the same dude for a while I get them for $40 per hour and he does great work. I started a thread a while back about tattoos and some of my current ones are show here:

A price example for me is my chest peice, the script along with the hear/angel wings set me back $120.00 which is a great deal. Took close to 3 hours total. My half sleeves on the other hand took quite a bit longer (I dont even know how much time or money i put into them).
If your thinking of getting a tattoo, talk to people in your area who have tattoo's, also look at the tattoo artist portfolio to see how "good" their work is. Be warned.....tattoos can become very addicting!!
