Gamestop will burn a hole in your pocket! Buy used. New games are too sensitive.

i only spend 60 bucks on a game if it's a must have.
and there aren't too many of those in the future, me thinks.
i bought my 360 for oblivion, so yes, i bought it new.
i bought bioshock new.
hell... i bought fallout 3 new. twice!
other than that, most of my other games have been used.

I don't think they are evil. Don't get me wrong. I buy most of my games brand new for $60, or the occasional cheap game off of the clearance rack at Target. But every once in a while I will head into gamestop and pick up a used game or two. Most of the games that I buy used are older anyway. If it comes to buying a game new for $60 or used for $55, I will buy it new every time. The only time I will buy a newer game used at gamestop is if the price is significantly different.
But to say Gamestop is evil is just stupid. I understand where the devs and everyone at the DICE conference are saying. But it also comes to the point where they have to understand that not everyone can afford to pay $60 for a game. So buying used is the main option for most people in today's economy. The only thing they can do to combat this, is like they mentioned, offer a lot of DLC that will make the buyer of the game want to keep it and not sell it to Gamestop. But in the end people are still going to end up trading in games, no matter what the creators try to do.
I still don't understand why everyone hates on Gamestop so much. They are a respectable business. I guarantee that if the people that hate on them so much had the opportunity to be in charge of a store selling used games that was bringing in the money gamestop is, they would do it in a heartbeat. I would.
I know, I know...... tl-dr

If I may add too....If some game titles were worth KEEPING for a longer period of time...trashy games need to stop being made so a flood of them quit coming into gamestop and suckers like me buy them, LOL.
I shudder that I almost bought 50 Cent BitS over Star Ocean at GameStop.
On the other hand too, we, the consumers will always look for alternative ways to get our product....it's the American way, baby.

Exactly. Just the other day I got rid of Naruto: The Broken Bond, GTA IV, and Assassins Creed. In full, all I got was $46 for all three of the games, when in reality thats not even half of what I paid for all those games when I bought them new.
But are they hurting the game world? I doubt it because my local GameStop is usually packed practically everytime Im there.
Heres the problem anyone who hasn't managed a company/department or who doesn't do accounting may not understand.... That 50% that they pay you would be a 100% markup if the game is sold immediately. But games don't always sell immediately, so when they drop the price, it goes down. They also offer specials (buy 2 get 1 free is essentially 33% off, 25% off etc) and they offer cards that get you 10% off any used game purchase (yes it costs you money but I have got MUCH more value than the 15 I paid for it)
You have overhead - rent, utilities, employees wages, all kinds of insurance - unemployment, workers comp stuff, etc. Not to mention anyone who does steal any items from them (I realize this isn't too easy).
So think about it this way - Gamestop buys Fracture from you when it was new for 25 dollars, they hold it on the shelf forever because no one wants it and sell it for 20 dollars used in a buy 2 get 1 free special so essentially they get 33% off that price it would be $13.33, so they lost 12 dollars (roughly) and if they held on to the game at different points in the year they have to pay taxes on their inventory. So yes every time a used copy of Gears 2 sells for 55 with no discount they make 25-30 dollars, but that helps offset the losses and their wages.
I have managed retail, a parts department and a service department at a car dealership, and at a machine shop. Believe me when I say they make money, but there are many many things you don't know about that cost them money as well. Like when Kidd buys 10 games and returns them all 15 times and gets the cashier to give him too much credit
All that being said, I purchase about 50% or more of my games used, mostly from Gamestop, and I will NEVER pay 60 dollars for a video game. Ever......
Could'nt have explained it any better myself (also lets hope i aced my Accounting Exam)
Also, 60 for a game is a horrible idea, done it twice and have regrettted it.
And as for the question, as someone mentioned earlier, their local GS is always packed, that means people are buying. So I dont think they are killing the game world
And last note, always better to sell to a third party than back to GS, even use amazon or something like i do.

Edit: What do you all think of a commision on used sales? the commision would go to the developers.

I've never had any problem inspecting a used disk at gamestop. As a matter of fact I've never had a problem with gamestop period. Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones. *shrugs*

Without watching the video, I'd like to add that G4 is also doing the "videogame community" a world of hurt too. Still, anyone who's ever pre-ordered a game for full price + tax (or S/H if online) and not gotten the game on time and/or with swag knows how unprofessional and inefficient they are. Before you even get into the used game argument, there's like 5 other major keypoints that suggest ridding of them would HELP the videogame market. And I think it's also because of Gamestop/EB that games aren't archived. You archive books, albums, and movies but not games? It's a racket built on the system of keeping a niche culture niche so only a few people make money off of it. And, yes, I worked for Gamestop, lol.

Man if gamestop is evil then, what does that make the other stores that sells you a game and won't buy it back?
There goes your used games for at least a little cheaper!
Besides any buisness that does what people want it to do with how it is run is doomed to fail, like stated ealier gamestop has bills to pay also, they need to make their money to. The people that think gamestop is evil is also the ones that walk in on the day of a big release and expect them to have copies of the game.
The the true evil is the game reviewers hype up a game and give a turd in a box a good review.
Just go back and think Atari games sold for about $25, NES $45-50, SNes $50, PS1 $55-60! Are the games over priced now? They can take my $63.00 with tax as long as the service was good, its my fault if I buy a bad game not Gamestops.
Spend your money wisely kiddies and try not to get burned.

I let every single customer that asks check the quality of our used games. If we have multiple copies and they don't ask I myself pick the best looking disc. And as if that's not enough I then proceed to make sure they know about our 30 day defective guarantee. Sorry the guys at your local Gamestop don't seem to care about their business.
Just because there are some bad employees here and there who aren't doing their job right does not mean the company as a whole is bad. That goes for any company not just Gamestop.

wowza! this thread has blown the F up!
gamestop is a business. yeah. we all get it. screw 'em.
sorry if you work there, but it's bullshit. you can buy an old, used game there for 25 bucks and return it the next day and get 2 bucks for it. (of course, they have the 7 day return or whatever, but this is not about that.) this is about how much you spend/make at this store.
it's not even about that, really. i can only speak for my local GS. they suck balls. when the fable 2 pub games/pre-order thing was around, i had jen do it for me cuz she was out shopping anyway. they never gave her the card. i was pissed, and took a little trip there 30 minutes later. i briefly explained the situation, and the asshole behind the counter laughed and handed me the card without even seeing my receipt. it was like a damn joke to him.
they are fuckin' shady.
i know i'm going in circles. sorry.
let me just say this: if you want a new game, buy it on ebay/amazon.
if you want a really old game cheap and fast, check gamestop.
if you want to sell a game, again, use ebay.
