I have put almost 300 hours into DMC 4, just having fun challenging myself, and I still don't have a 1000, mainly because I'm playing it for fun. Same with PSU and Transformers, ask Shock, all we do on there is fight each other not for achievements, just for fun. PSU I have over 2500 hours just on 1 character, and I have had the achievements on there for awhile.

All in all what I think it comes down to is everyone gets satisfaction differently from playing video games. I really enjoy finishing a game I start (even the bad ones) and not everyone is like that. I enjoy winning competitions, but I hate all the drama/cheating/etc that comes from having them. So I'm happy to game with my friends playing a game I enjoy.
As for all the people slamming the competitions etc, I have this to say: If you don't like them, ignore the threads. I personally am not a fan, but that's why I don't ever post in them. Let the people who enjoy doing that do that. At least they are GAMING related posts instead of some of the random crap people seem to try to come up with just to get an award for 150 posts. If "everyone" on this site hates the competition threads so much and doesn't post - they will go away.
You always have to take the good with the bad. Other sites the mods are all over everyone for any little thing done and here, unless things get way out of hand, Jackson always has encouraged the right to free speech. The threads do tend to get off topic sometimes but as long as the thread starter doesn't have a problem with it, its all in good fun.
The wonderful thing is that if someone on the site really irritates you - you simply block communications with them. Then you have to hear nothing they say. If they do say something, and you find out about it then be the bigger person and walk away. I mean this the nicest way - I am friends with plenty of people on this site but I don't care a hoot about your opinion of me. If you don't like me, good for you. If you do like me, that's fine too. I've never seen anyone post anything bad about me, but hey I don't really care if they do. I've learned that everyone on the internet has an opinion and everyone feels the need to share it whenever they feel like (like I am doing right now ).
So gamerscore competition it up if that's what floats your boat, if its not, ignore it. Use events or don't, block people or don't. Just don't worry about what other people do if you don't agree with it, just do what you enjoy and the site will be more enjoyable
/end rant
And I'm enjoying the nostalgia of playing Phantasy Star 2 at the moment....woot!

I play the game to experience what it has to offer, whether its a great stroy, characters or awesome gameplay. I play for achievements after I've gotten through the game, Fallout amd Tales of Vesparia are good examples of this

well..it doesnt really matter is you play for achievements or not...cause as long as you enjoy what your doing, right ? if you enjoy waffling then do that or just play for entertainment. as long as you have fun with what your doing then it is considered enjoyment

I am a mixture of both. I do consider myself a point whore but sometimes when I lack patience I enjoy a good game of Halo 3 or World at War, even though I suck at both lol.

I also play for both. There are a lot of games that I play purely because I like them. One being Fallout 3. I was able to combine both oh that one. I got the full gs and enjoyed every moment of it.
I enjoy playing video games in general. Nothing, including gamerscore, will take away from my love of gaming and take the enjoyment out of it.

I personally do both. Obviously I did NOT play Hannah Montanna for the pure enjoyment of it.
I do still play COD4 though, even though I 1k'd it and have a Level 55 10th Prestige on it. As a matter of fact I upped my streak last night, going 23 and 0 baby.
That said, some achievement games are also games I would have played anyways, like TMNT Reshelled, and Xmen Origins, Lego Batman and such.
I also went through the abuse of Veteran on COD 2, 3, + 4, and soon to add 5 and 6, and Classic. Not only for the bragging rights, but because the chievo's prove those bragging rights to be legit.

Achievements are cool, and definitely motivate playing sometimes. I mean, i dont base my gaming off getting achievements. I want to play and enjoy the single player, and multiplayer, and if chievos pop up...great! But somedays i go hard for them. But i dont see how anyone could only like a game for going for achievements. i mean that would just be.......

I play games for achievements and enjoyment. Hell if I didn't play games for the achievements I would have missed out on some fun games that I normally would have never even thought about touching. Hell I would have never touched Shellshock 2 or Eat Lead but I enjoyed playing shellshock even though it wasnt the greatest game ever. Eat lead i would have never ever ever touched if I wasnt going for achievements but it turns out its not a bad game at all and its freakin hilarious.
