Hey guys..

Over the last week or so, I have had a real bad problem with my Xbox freezing.. I will be playing a game, and then all the sudden it will like lag for a second, then then screen will freeze. Sometimes the audio from the game I am playing will cease, but sometimes it will continue like normal (will just the visuals frozen in place).

My Xbox is about two years old... For the last six- seven months or so, it might have happened once a month or so.. But over the last, say, two weeks.. It has happened almost every day at least once. It has occurred while playing several different games, however it got worse since I have been playing Fallout: New Vegas (with all DLC).

Is this something directly related to the Xbox? Or could something with game be causing this? Any input would help, thanks.

Fallout NV has a history of being a freezer, but if your console continues to freeze with several different games, you have pretty much ruled out the game as the offender.

Do you get any graphic artifacting? Artifacting would look something like this:

It's spots or backgrounds all pixilated and washed out, usually green, but could be any colors.

Freezing could be caused by excessive heat due to dust and crap in your console, or it can be the beginning of RRoD, usually caused by the motherboard warping away from the GPU. Either way, I would be looking for a way to clean my console out, and DO NOT use a vacuum to clean electronics. A little bit of static from a vacuum cleaner can turn your console into a door stop.

No I don't get any type of graphics artifacting like that... Once in a blue moon it will freeze on a black screen, but usually whatever was on the screen just stays immobile.

I will clean out my Xbox today to see if that helps... And I'll try to avoid the vacuum. Thanks for the tips.

If you have an air compressor, that would be ideal, but a can of compressed air should be fine. If it's an older console, take off the face plate and blow in behind it toward the back of the console with the console on and running to use the fans to help blow everything out. A slim is a little more difficult to clean out, but blow in from the top vent and the debris will hopefully coming out of the side vent.

Yea I have the slim... I do have air compressor.. I might look up Youtube to see if I can find any good "how to" videos regarding disassembly and cleaning of the slim..

THIS is a good tutorial from a website that I trust. It has a step by step guide with pictures and a link to a YouTube video. I never watched the video, but I can vouch for the instructions in the thread. Just remember, the faceplate on a slim has a ribbon cable that connects the touch sensor for the power button to the motherboard, so take care!

You could also wait for the Xbox One, and place your 360 next to it. The fan on the new console will be powerful enough to sweep up debris from any electronics within a 5ft radius :)
