The character creator is a lot of fun and we're having fun rotating player matches between us.

It is still a respectable $60 game and delivers more than a lot of other games, it just seems so thin and weak compared to all the crap you could do in SC3 and 4.

The character creator was on the past two Soul Caliburs. For a 60$ game to be respectable wouldint it have to add something to the series rather then completely slice content in half. Just my opinion but 60$ is way too much for a game with this little to do other then online matches. More like a 39.99 title.

Well they got you didn't they? And you managed to trade it in and buy a 10 dollar game? Lol just poking fun at ya, mang.

Sure SC:V could have been tons better. They totally put no effort in the single player and rehashed certain things but this just shows the series is dying. I do not think they are going to support it beyond releasing dampierre to the public as dlc. All we can do is remember what the series was, how it became great and try to forget the depressing end of it.

I am just trying to get my 60 dollars worth and then shelve this title. Onto bigger and better things.

Yeah they definitely did get me. Brand loyalty will definitely bite you in the arse if you preorder titles and eliminate the word of mouth factor. I traded it in and got "Shadows of the Damned" which is not 10 dollars (30$). So not a complete waste. Soul Calibur V is a glorified expansion pack as far as i'm concerned. Buy it if you have no interest in storyline, replay value or anything other then fighting your friends online.

Not to be an asshole who jumps on site just to rant but I have to say I think every is forgetting this is a fighting game meant to be played with other people. I can understand everyone's complaint about the game "lacking content" but this isn't the PS2 era anymore, we have online play now ... we don't need added modes to play by ourselves to make the game more "worthwhile" if we can play with another person now.

Speaking with competitive players in the Soul Calibur scene just about every single one of them say this is the best SC since SCII, the addition of Just Guard added to the defensive mechanics of the game making nonsense like the famous evo moment possible in SCV (in a sense) then with the addition of the Critical Gauge players can no longer "spam" Guard Impacts and actually have to think about whether or not they should fish for it or to use their meter towards Brave Edge moves or Critical Edge supers. The little things like those add so much to a fighting game in terms of mind games, decision making etc.

I'm not trying to speak down on anyone or anything but this is how I feel about the matter. I shall return in a month or so whenever I decide to open up XBA again :p

So basically your saying the one group that SCV specifically caters to, the "Online Soul Calibur Scene" say this is the best entry since SCII? That's not exactly news. They are supposed to like it as they are the only group to benefit. It's impossible to ignore that "Team Soul" outsourced the single player campaign of SCV and got a huge pile of manure in return. And no matter how good half a game may be, the other half still sucks and therefore the game as a whole is mediocre. Fighters may be meant for online play like you said but so are MOST GENRES, especially sports and shooters. And last time I checked Gears,CoD and Halo still had highly polished single player campaigns. Fighters don't get a pass on having to provide a complete package. If they want leeway they can drop the price by $30.00. You seem to also be forgetting that "Mortal Kombat" just raised the bar for the whole genre. So it's not like theres nothing to compare a bare minimalist title and a complete one. Soul Calibur is simply just getting left in the dust in both quality and innovation. Long live MK and BlazBlue.

We agree that it's a fighting game for people to play with other people. The problem is they are re-using assets that are 3-titles old now and the majority of the additions are either cosmetic or anemic in terms of mechanics--they charged $60 for what was effectively a minor content update and a code patch.

I do agree that it was smart on their part to change the dynamics of the characters and use the Critical Edge / revenge meter and the Brave Edge / EX move as it makes the game both more approachable for novices and quicker to have fun amongst friends who have been playing since the arcade days of Soul Blade.

You know we love you here at XBA Setsuna--we may be a stranger to you but you're not a stranger to us ;)

Call me hokey, but I've been playing the series since SCII, and what's always endeared me to the title so much is the characters. They've always been so colorful and intriguing, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading their in-game biographies, unlocking their pictures in the gallery, and playing through the personalized arcade modes to learn their stories. With that all gone this time around, I feel that the characters (with perhaps the exceptions of Patroklos and Pyrrha) are somehow diminished. I'm not as invested in them as I have been in the previous three incarnations, and it feels as though there are no souls behind them anymore, only movesets.

I feel bad for characters like Mitsurugi, Hilde, Yoshimitsu, Cerventes and even Enzio who simply appear in the game without any ending or dialogue in storymode. Just faces with movesets like you said. They also make asshole changes that they don't explain. Why does lizardman have a name? Does he have his memory back? Yoshimitsu has no wooden limbs? When did a new guy replace the old one?

Oh you ~ <3

I do agree though on the new characters being ... Soul Less (I suppose this contributes to the lack of package on one side of the game), I would love to know more about Leixia's character but all I know is that shes cheerful and beautiful and spars with Patrklos once in the story and thats it, its hard to feel attachment to a character this way as I do Noel in Blazblue.

Personally I like the new characters but I definitely would like to know more about them, even something as simple as a few pages of text. Viola seems cool and I love her character design, and I am also curious about stuff like why Lizardman suddenly has a name and what happened with this Yoshimitsu being the second one.

The other thing is, despite my complaints, SC 5 is a very fun and polished fighting game and the online implementation is brilliant. The matchmaking works well and I love the unique features like the colosseo and the rival/soul link system.
