Major games are mostly day 1 purchases for people, and unless we get review copies of games, it takes us just as long to play through a game as it takes anyone else. Plus the time to write up a review and you're looking at a week minimum for a new release. Since everyone else has already bought games by then, I haven't been bothering.
If you feel that that's an incorrect assumption, then I'd be willing to reconsider, by all means.
Until our site has more traffic (like 100x more) our review copies will be fairly sparse so previews would be regurgitated GI articles and not actually our impressions, so that's probably not going to work.
As it is, we're entering the slow period for releases, so if people want to go back and do reviews for games that haven't been covered, there's no reason not to. Also, if people want the staff to review specific games, let us know.
but there is still games that have released, and probably will release that didn't have reviews for them. We didn't review any of the major games to release this year like Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, etc.
and I know it takes a while to play a game and write a review, but with games dropping in price faster now, many people are waiting to purchase, and reviews can sway the opinion that hey, this game isn't all hype and actually warrants a purchase. I know every person isn't like me buying games day one and actually waits whether because of many, waiting for reviews/impression, or any other of the many reason to wait. It would be good to get reviews out from members to show it's worth buying, and I think personally there's too few staff writers to accomplish this, and little incentive for anyone else to put the time and effort in to do a thorough and worthwhile review.
I guess what i'm trying to say is it would be nice to add a section to the site about reviews, previews, and personal opinions on games. discussion threads are great, but don't really bring anything until the game is released and we can talk about gameplay/story/all the other mechanics. it would be cool to get the community more active with reviews and other things that could help us potentially get the traffic to get review copies and thus reviews, etc out quicker.
btw if possible could you pm me what games/companies have sent writers here review copies, i'm curious.

Just as an addition to this conversation, since we don't get review copies, it requires the staff to spend their own money to review games. So those games you mentioned, I'd love to review them, if you would like a review, feel free to send me a copy of the game

But discussion threads end up being review threads since we merge the 2. The reason we started merging them is that even after reviews were posted, game discussion continued in the discussion threads and no one responded to reviews, lol. The way the site is set up makes it really difficult to navigate through a lot of threads on each game.
I started a bioshock infinite review but everyone had already formed opinions before I even got it, lol. That seems to be a recurring theme. I figured no one would bother to read a review on a game they've played.
We definitely need to do better on timely reviews, but as Mini said we have to buy the games ourselves for the most part. More staff is something we are considering, but also user reviews and more user activity is the best way to get better stuff around here.

I would reconsider if given a position to become a staff writer. I would make that my sole purpose for being here, instead of always having to bring the peanut butter and whipped cream to the xba parties.

I wanna be in that party.

I wish we had a system similar to Metacritic where we each rate a game upon playing it and a grade is posted on the games profile based on the XBA members average rating. It's easy to rip on one persons opinion but harder to fight the consensus.
