strenght of schedule plays a big part. ohio state(85) florida state(80) auburn(16).
Where did you get these SOS numbers? Sagarin, who almost everyone uses, has OSU at 57, FSU at 63, and AU at 20.

Anyway, SOS is as much a byproduct of inflated conference rankings that are biased toward the SEC as anything. It's a logical progression stemming from preseason rankings that are fueled by media hype.
Case in point, Auburn at the 20th best SOS. Their non-conference schedule has 6-6 Washington State, 7-5 Sun Belt powerhouse Arkansas State, 2-10 FCS juggernaut West Carolina, and a 6-6 FAU team that wasn't even invited to a bowl this year. That certainly isn't a top 20 non-conference schedule. That means that the top 20 SOS is dependant entirely on the belief that their conference is so strong that it pulls their schedule strength out of the 60-70 range.
Beyond all of that, it becomes a circular argument. SEC teams lose and the losses are "strong losses" and wins against conceived powers disproportionately thrust their teams up through the rankings.
The proof is in the fact that when Auburn beat Alabama and everyone waited to see if Auburn would leap OSU, the BCS rankings came out and the biggest shocker to all SEC proponents was that Auburn didn't jump OSU in the computer rankings. "But, but, but, that's the part of the equation that absolutely should support the claim that SOS is a huge factor." That's when you started to see experts like BCS guru Brad Edwards start to realize the Auburn would not pass OSU without Ohio State losing in the B1G championship game. That's when people realized that a 40 spot discrepancy in SOS was a myth. If SOS was a true measure of a team that is backed up by facts, 40 spots should more than make up for a loss to a "top-20" LSU team.
Of course all of the SEC can exhale since the Buckeyes took a shit against MSU, so all of that is moot. But I'm not buying that the SEC is so incredible that the SEC championship game is some automatic play-in to the natty. I see through the SEC hype.
