They are only there so that you can add them to your Caravan deck; the deck you use for Caravan can consist of any number of any different types of cards, with certain restrictions on Kings, Queens, and Jacks. There's no missions tied to them, and the only achievements are the win 3 and win 30 games of Caravan, which you can pull off without ever buying cards, so no worries :-)

So I am at level 9 now and I finally found a place to stay where I can store items:

Not too sure why they shoot you on sight, i'm also vilified with the legion and had no problem entering their campsite. Maybe its because you're wearing the brotherhood of steel armor. Try wearing legion armor to confuse them somewhat.
The t-51b is the Brotherhood armor, the t-45d is not Brotherhood specific. At least that's what the pop up menu told me. I'll try the Legion idea and I'll leave my companion somewhere cause he also shoots them on sight, lol.

Also, the problem I was having with the Legion was that Boone hated them, I was alright when I went alone, even wearing the non-brotherhood specific power armor!
