Frankly I've attended a few, and I hardly see it as a rite of passage. Its mostly a bunch of unwashed, non-deodorant wearing dudes waiting in line to get a game that they took the next day off work to play (assuming they are employed). I'm in the minority for those who actually don't smell like a men's locker room.

It might have to do with which games I have done the Midnight Release: ODST, Reach, & FF XIII are the few that come to mind. Maybe it has to do with the Gamestop that I go to get these games, I don't know. But frankly unless I REALLY want the game, its not worth it to me to deal with some of the people in line (this includes the asinine conversations AND the smell - which is bad when you consider that we are OUTSIDE). I had a better time freezing to death waiting outside the Old Navy a few years back to get the free copy of Lego Rock Band.

The only good thing about them is that I realized there are bigger nerds out there than me!! :nerd:

yea i would not call it a right of passage. It is not hard to stand outside a store for a hour or two to pick up a game, for me its honestly harder not snapping on the morons in front of me or behind me "Discussing" which system is better.

I am done with Midnight releases for games. It isnt worth taking a day off work or losing sleep or having the wife get made at me for picking up a game at that time, plus the manager of the local gamestop i go to usually gives me the game i want a day or two before its released anyways

ive gone to a few like Call Of Duty Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3 being the most recent and they were jokes. The crowds were poorly handled,The security got way to aggressive, and some of the people in line would not shut up about whatever they were talking about.

I have been to 2 - Mass Effect 2 + 3. For the most part the people that I have met at those occasions are good people. A few 'interesting' types and a few dirtbags. My definition of dirtbag is people that leave their garbage behind. Food wrappers, beer cans or bottles, etc. That always pisses me off. Talk to the guys in the store and they get to pick it all up.

Lol@ "interesting" types. The last midnight release that I went to had so many "interesting" people that I sat in the car and waited for them to leave before I went in. That was for Fable 3 and I think quite a few of us were sorely disappointed (me included).

I did go to the 360 midnight release at GameStop but our local store only got like 6 consoles (for the first few that preordered) so there was only a handful in the store (and a flippin mob in the shopping center parking lot). Got mine and got the hell out of there!

Ya cute chick in a store full of dudes, most of which have never seen a woman, what could possibly go wrong?

I'll only do the midnight release thing if I have a few friends that are also doing it. There's no point for me to rush out to get a game to play alone..

I love Bobcat Goldthwait's joke about how he is in the theater for the re-release of Star Wars and he yells out "Have any of you guys ever SEEN a vagina?!"

OT: Gears 3 was my first midnight launch I ever went to. The line wasn't terribly long and I only talked to 2 dudes but for most of the time my spot in the line was right in front of the Applebee's front doors and I got SO hungry smelling the food. I always shop at that Gamestop though cuz of the hot chick that works there. She gives me sweet deals.

They're a bunch of geeks. They wouldn't even know how to approach a beautiful woman. They would all huddle together, adjust their pocket protectors, hike up their pants a little more, fix their glasses and would completely shy away from her.

I've hit quite a few midnight release parties. Generally I go with a group of friends, so that I can avoid those akward moments where some grown man dressed in a trench coat carrying a katana might want to start up a conversation with me and tell me how p.c. gaming is tons better.

Gamestop has had a few huge midnight release parties. One in particular that is memorable was when Halo 3 came out. They took over the parking lot of Target and a few other businesses and filled it with tons of things to kill time. Red Bull reps made an appearance and distributed a shit ton of product to all of us there. Hundreds of people there amped up on energy drinks, made for an interesting night. Pizza Hut followed with more pizzas than I had ever seen. A van completely full of pizza. That ladies and gentlemen was a beautiful site. Gamestop had also rented out a few jumpers and held huge Halo 2 competition. Yours truly took first place (that's bragging rights). During the course of the night, the Store Manager would come out and throw out some swag. Five minutes till release, the Gamestop employees moved a couple speakers outside and started broadcasing the Halo 3 theme song. Then bam! instant chaos ensued when they opened the doors for everyone to start claiming their copies. That was one hell of a release party.

I love midnight releases at my Gamestop... mainly because I am friends with everyone that works there. We have made it a tradition to all go to a local Mexican restaurant and get something to eat and have some fun conversation before they have to work the release. I have been to every midnight release that I have known of that I got games for except Skyrim. Had to work that overnight so they came by and dropped the stuff off for me. Nothing like working a McDonalds and getting a bag given to you through the window.

Midnights aren't a rite of passage... they can just be a cool experience or they can be filled with morons... just like any other day.

There's no way I'd call a midnight release a rite of passage, and as such I have not been to one. I'm not sure if I ever will because stores like gamestop (at least that I've been to) have never run out of a game I want and even if gamestop runs out of the game Walmart has plenty of it.

Hell in my town the midnight release for MW3 was evidently huge but when I went to buy the game around 9 the next morning the guy goes "we're almost out, good thing you came early" as I see a stack of probably 75 games sitting on the counter behind him let alone the two display cases Walmart had dedicated to MW3.

So if I really care about a game I go in the morning after release before or after class depending on the day's schedule, still get the first day buzz of the game and none of the hassel.

I do have to say though if it's the midnight release for a good movie thats a different story, the people that go to those are often more fun to watch than the movie.

Lol@ "interesting" types. The last midnight release that I went to had so many "interesting" people that I sat in the car and waited for them to leave before I went in. That was for Fable 3 and I think quite a few of us were sorely disappointed (me included).

Ya cute chick in a store full of dudes, most of which have never seen a woman, what could possibly go wrong?

This came to mind when I read that:

On topic. I have been to quite a few midnight releases in the past. I just don't see a point in it anymore. I work midnights, and I am not about to waste a vacation or personal day just to pick up a video game,.

Though the ones in the past I have been to were done really well. The guy who runs my local gamestop takes a lot of pride in doing things well. He always has free pizza and drinks for everyone that is there, even if it means ordering more if he gets more people than he expected. Plus he always has tourny's and want not with winner/winners getting free swag and copies of the game. The last ones that I actually went to were Gears of War 3 and MW2, and the only reason I went to those was because I had already had the day off.

The list of ones I have been to that I can remember are: Gears of War 1, 2, and 3. Modern Warfare 1 and 2. Halo 3 and Reach. Plus a couple of the Maddens just because friends were going.

I've only ever gone to one midnight release and that was for MW2. I swore I'd never waste my time waiting in line for a fucking game at midnight again. I did chuckle once that night though as somebody's grandma was in line.
