Did they find out what it was, Kent? Our baby has RSV, he was diagnosed today- and breathing is a big issue... but they'd probably know if that is what it was since it causes a cough and stuff.

Right now they are thinking it is a case of Really bad acid reflux (causing the swelling in his throat) combined with laryngomalacia which basically means the cartilage in his throat is immature and collapses a bit when he breaths in. Put those two things together and you get the emergency we had the other day where he just couldn't breath at all.
They flew him and my wife up north to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City last night and I drove up today. They have specialists here that can give him better attention.
We'll see in the next few days what the plan of attack is, chances are he will require surgery at some point to help open up his airway so he can get back to breathing on his own.

Hopefully your son is in as good of hands as ours was in the NICU here! I'm sure he will be treated with the utmost care, and all our thoughts are with you and your family.
...and yes, this is EVOL! lol

Haha, the real EVOL this time, not the better half
This is the best children's hospital in the state so we're happy he is here even if it is further from home.

Excellent! I know it sucks to have to travel, but the sacrifice is worth it for the best for your boy!

We were up late last night. They took out his breathing tube and we wanted to hang around as long as we could take it because we're just so nervous about leaving him there for fear of him having breathing troubles now that he's breathing on his own.
Of course he has a nurse there constantly watching over him, we just wanted to sit there and hold him as long as we could.
Just called this morning and he did well all night, he still has to work to breathe, but he's breathing on his own and thats a great step in the right direction.
They'll be taking a look down his throat today to see what they think should be done to open his airway up.

That's good news!
So they still aren't 100% sure he'll need surgery? It sounds like the worst is behind you all!

Hey congrats on both him doing well and having him, my son just turned 1 in December and I dont know what I would do without him. Thats probably the worst thing you have to do is leave him by himself (like you said he has a nurse but its not you). Again Congrats on having him and I hope everything goes well.

That's awesome Kent!! From one dad to another, I know what it's like to have a big scare like that.
Mine wasn't exactly like what you're going through. My 2 year old had his issues during the pregnancy. He was high risk through the whole thing, so it was always scary going in to the doctors. We went to the regular doc and a specialist every week. In the end we went full term and he is healthy as any parent would want.
Just sharing that for support. When he is fully through it, this will just be a story to tell him later in life. My family will keep him in our thoughts/prayers still.

Thanks everyone. He went in for a bronchoscopy today and they thought the same thing the Doctors down south thought so they went ahead and trimmed some of the floppy tissue that was obstructing his airway.
It should help, but isn't necessarily the end all cure. He could totally recover in the next day or two and breathe easy, or he may continue to struggle a bit and they may have to do some more trimming or other options.
Time will tell, but at least we're on the right track.

Little dude is doing well. They are moving him out of the ICU today and just into the infant ward. He has all his oxygen tubes out now and is breathing on his own. Just has one little tube shooting down his nose for feeding until they see how his reflux is doing.

Wow, I feel like such a heel, I totally missed this thread! I knew your baby was born, but I didn't see the thread for it
First off congratulations Kent, and secondly very glad to hear he is doing better. I'll keep him in my prayers.
