@Meta, yes. Whatever you have slotted in your ability bar will raise that skill line. For your armor and weapons, you don't need to craft anything. The stuff you pick up in your adventures, use those to research. The research option is on the crafting table you are using.
@Mo, you can buy the motifs, but some are very pricey. Most of the ones out there are easily farmable. The more exotic ones are hard to come by and easily gotten. I was a cheap bastard and traveled to you to save some gold earlier and saw you on a new character, watcha building?

It's just a High Elf Sorcerer. I needed to clear out some of my inventory - recipes and low level design motifs. Instead of selling them I have been banking them and it great for a new character. Only, it's getting out of hand. I have an almost full bank, mostly treasure maps and maps for surveys. I can't keep up with the influx of new maps and surveys and most of them are a pain in the ass to do so I am thinking of selling them all.

Some of the treasure maps I would recommend selling. The surveys are bound to you and very important to do. It is an easy way to gain some materials. You also have the option to create some new characters that you can use as mules to hold your stuff.

I have a clothing writ - akaviri leather guards. It's epic and I don't have the motif nor do I have the foggiest idea where to farm for it.

Oh, the writs are something different. That particular motif set you have to gain alliance points in Cyrodiil to purchase. How many writs are on it?

They came in all at once and I couldn't deal with any of them. Some of those armor sets I had never even heard of.
