How much different is this from long haul flights, truck drives, couch potatoes? I think there may be more to this story then what they posted. I heard about this the other day and I just don't think all the details were released. But maybe they were, I still don't buy it though.

The problem is, people tend to sit in the same upright position during their game sessions. I tend to move around and switch how I sit, lay, stand (during some gh/rb sessions) when I play and never stay put for more than 30min. Sucks for that family, but halo is a shitty title to die from...sounds like the clots sticky grenaded him.

Notice how the length of his gaming session wasn't stated, yet it is stated that "he would spend up to 12 hours on his Xbox" like it was a regular occurrence. That alone throws up questions. DVT's really only happen after long periods of time, and even then are typically likely to be more lethal if the person in question is overweight.
The issue I have here is that they specifically state that he died playing Xbox. He could have probably died doing anything else, but the media chose to bring this to light as yet another "example" of the whole "videogames are the devil" stigma. Yes, I know a person died, but I am tired of the media feeding people bullshit like "Oh, this serial killer played this videogame, so all gamers are evil serial killers." or "This person died while playing this game (and in very small text "for 3 days"). Videogames are not bad things. Like most things, they are a form of entertainment. [b[To be enjoyed in moderation[/b]. Something that society is failing to teach as of late.
Yet people bitch about doing too much of something and how they need someone to help them control themselves, and yet when someone else steps in to settle or moderate their habits they bitch about how somebody is interfering with "their life".

I pretty much agree with you but I should point out that DVTs are more LIKELY to occur with longer periods of time, but you can throw one sitting in the same spot for shorter times too (even an hour or two). The fact that he threw a clot and it ended up in his lung is what killed him. It could have caused a stroke or could have dissolved on its own. Its entirely possible if he gamed for 12 hours a time often and didn't move much he might have had several clots in his system. And of course if you don't notice any problems you won't find out until its too late.
If people do legitimately play for 12 hours straight and don't move around or stand up and stretch or something they should be warned about this. However to me that's common sense. I've played for 12-18 hours at a time (rarely mind you but it has happened) and never once when I got up to stretch I said to myself "this is good to prevent clots." I got up and stretched and walked around because I needed to do so. Not to mention does he have any family history...blah blah blah. The news is biased, anyone who tells you otherwise is naive or lying.
I do feel sorry for his parents, I can't imagine what they are dealing with, but I do hate how these news stories act like video games are the devil.

I know someone that is a fatass and plays too much WoW/xbox and fucked up my last gamertag...was reading it at first thinking it was him since he plays games over 14 hours a day...
anyways....he shoulda focused more on real life and health a little more than he focused on xbox. i feel bad for his parents unless the supported his addiction.

Wow, crazy.
Well, I can't sit still, I go from the sitting on the couch to the floor, back to the couch in a laying position, back to the floor, grab some food, drink a beer or two, that good stuff.
That's generally my LONG gaming sessions and they've never lasted more than 3-6 hours. I just can't play a game comfortably in one spot long at all. At that note, I don't even get 3-6 hours a week anymore.
Motivation anyone?

I once stayed in my seat on a flight from Paris to D.C...but I routinely stretched. I feel sorry for his family and friends, but really, I doubt his long gaming sessions were the only issue.

I stay in the same seat on the couch, but I usually switch from sitting, to leaning, to laying down, feet up, feet down, and I get up to use the restroom/get food/get rid of ADD all the time. Sucks for this kid though...
