I would definitely say it's worth your time to get in to Gears.
It has a big following and the community is still going strong. It's going to explode again when 3 comes out.
Like any shooter, it's important to get familiar with all the weapons in Gears, what their effects are and what their reload timings are like. Since Gears is a third person game, awareness of your surroundings is even more important than usual.
Also, you need to get comfortable with the roll/dodge maneuver and the sticky cover system. Learn how to time a roll into a roadie run into cover, learn how to mantle cover and go straight in to a roadie run, learn how close you can be to cover before it will "grab you".
These are all just the basic maneuvers, there's more advanced stuff that gets used in online matches.
Just get used to using the Action button well, staying in cover and roadie running everywhere to minimize exposure to weapons fire.
