Xbox...ELITE!!!

Well now, with all of the rumors flying about a black 360, I was iffy about any information recieved, especially during the begining of April. It seems, however, that Game Informer has taken a step up and confirmed the existence of the black 360; it will be called the Xbox Elite. From what I've read, there will be no removal of the Core pack, and the Premium pack will not be dropped down to 299 as some optimists believed; the Elite will, in fact, be a third SKU. Marked at $479, it will sport HDMI, a 120GB harddrive, and a sleek black look that will be shared by the controllers and headsets. Apparently, it will only be "Limited Edition". If this does prove to be true, I'm going to be pretty pissed off. I have my premium and love it, but, to me, it's utter BS that I purchased what was said to be the best, and not even a year later I could have bought something so much better for only an extra $79, which is less than the price of a 20GB harddrive. In a perfect world MS should honor "upgrades" for current core and Premium users where what they paid is knocked off of the Elite price...yeah, that'll happen, when Hell freezes maybe.

ok but its not like I am going to be caring my 360 around and getting it dirty :S It will stay in its corner and never get dirty. Its just like a computer who wants a black computer???(I am stuck with the back macbook but still love the machine just not the color) and all my tv and sound systems are gray silver or white

The white is one thing that makes the 360 stand out from other consoles of the past. I personally like the white, and most of my A/V equipment is either white or silver, so it matches perfectly. I wouldn't buy a 360 all over again just to get a black one, and, even though I have an HDTV, it does not have an HDMI port, so I don't really care about that either. I'm just afraid what the price of a bigger harddrive may be, if a 20GB is $100, imagine how much MS will charge for a 120GB by itself.

They will really drop the bomb on this if they don't include the HD-DVD Drive with this new unit. They have to realize that there direct competitor is Sony and not trying to compete against them in the new optical wars is a bad mistake.
Also, I really hope they do re-evaluate there pricing on a bigger hard drive option, because they really can't think that people will go out and buy a new version to get the bigger hard drive.
I would love to get the HDMI feature as my TV does have it and it would free up one of my component ports, but I am not selling off my old unit and purchasing a new one just to get that feature.
But this is the way it always is with technology - There is always a bigger and better version of everything within a few months. That is why electronic manufacturers are in the business they are in.

I am still not convinced this will be a regular retail box. I think "special Edition" may fit, but I still believe this box will be available ONLY to people that subscribe to the IP TV feature that Microsoft will be debuting later.

I guess only time will tell about retail. As to San's comment, it has been said that MS announced they will not use the HD-DVD technology with the new Xbox version because it is quote "an unproven technology". I think they are playing it safe and not including HD-DVD in order to both keep the cost low, and because there is no way to tell yet whether HD-DVD will win out. They're on top right now and I don't think they want to make a Sony-esque mistake by basing their new device on a format that is not the market-dominator. DVD is standard now, and, in my opinion, it still will be for a long time to come, so it is a pretty intelligent move to stick with it for now.

http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2007/03/21/new-upgraded-360-may-ship-with-data-retention-cable
Apparently, a data-retention cable will be included with the new Xbox Elite and the 120GB harddrive in order to transfer data over. Like the article says, Microsoft better come up with a seamless way to transfer data between your old harddrive and the new upgraded harddrive or the xbox elite, otherwise no one will be interested in upgrading.
*EDIT*
It seems that the price of the 120GB harddrive has been rumored at $200. If this is true, I'll be even more pissed. This guy says exactly what I (and probably a lot of other people) think:

Pelican sells a data transfer kit that you plug your HD into and download to your PC for backing up. Costs under $20.
As for teh linked article, that guy is nothing more than a whiny little bitch that makes points while leaving out true facts. For example, you don't HAVE to buy an MS branded fiber optic cable. You can get a cheap one for under $20. You don't HAVE to buy the MS wireless adapter. There are about a dozen different options to hook up a device to a network including wireless, in-wall electrical wiring and wired. Several options that use both the USB or the Ethernet port.
As for HDMI and 120 GB harddrive...who really give a sh*t. Our Xbox 360's seem to work just fine today with 20 GB and Component output. For those that are running out of HD space, delete the stupid stuff like gamerpics, demos and themes you aren't using. You can always re-download them. Clear the music off and put it on a flash drive or portable drive. HDMI is just about useless as the 360 does not utilize any 1080p GAMING output at this time. HD-DVD could utilize it, but 99% of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD disks are upconversion, not originally shot in the 1080p format. In each case, component cable is more than sufficient for our needs. These two options are simply giving the consumer more choices to upgrade IF THEY CHOOSE.
And quite frankly, this guy is the same type of person that would have screamed bloody murder if MS came to the table initially with this package at $479 instead of $399. Its not like the Xbox 360 was released last week, it has officially been on the market for 16 months as of today, and almost two full years come November.
The bottom line is this, early adopters ALWAYS end up getting the short end of the stick with ever single product. Prices go down, more features are added and for gaming consoles, they are slimmed down and/or jazzed up.

A standalone $179.99 HDD also ships April 29. This package includes one 120GB HDD, software, and a specialized cable to port data from a user's current hard drive to the new one. To complement the new black console, Microsoft will also ship a wireless black controller (MSRP $49.99), a black Play and Charge Kit ($19.99), and a standalone rechargeable battery pack ($11.99) on April 29, also in black..
"The Elite is not a limited edition. It's permanent. And we will not replace any sku," Penello explained when referring to the flurry of rumors preceeding the official announcement. "We now have three SKUs and we predict the primary seller will continue to be the Pro system."

I was wrong on this one. The vibe we got in Vegas was that this thing would be for IPTV customers only. Looks like MS changed their mind, and probably for the better.

$180 for a 120 GB hard drive... good grief...Has MS not looked at the price of Hard Drives recently?
I have a real bad feeling that this unit will either be sitting right alongside the same colored Sony product or they will all be gobbled up by eBay'ers to sell to Canadian web surfers.
I still think including the HD-DVD drive in this new unit would have been a perfect opportunity for MS to push that platform.
Sorry so pesimistic, but this just isn't a wow factor for me at all.

has a release date been put on this yet? I really don't see why they are not selling the HDMI cables without the console and why they changed it to black(yuk).
I think I might get the 120GB HD though
