Well I couldn't remember china besides china still isn't failing. Those aren't really part of socialism either.. Cuba is a fine place though.

By the year 2006, public sector employment was 78% and private sector 22%, compared to 91.8% to 8.2% in 1981

They are getting better but only because they are becoming less government controlled.

Until last march most cubans weren't allowed to stay in luxury hotels, go to resort beaches, buy dvd players or computers. The government JUST then allowed them to do so after all these years. Thats barring the fact that most of them will have to save for years to afford any of these things, other than that it's an awesome place to live....lots of beaches and sun!!!

As much as I dislike many of the things our society represents, I wouldn't live anywhere else. You have to take the bad with the good.

True true. I just shudder when I hear Doubya (no offense). There are alot of things that we need to change, fuel, power options, transportation, environmental, etc...

!!! But the idea of socialism is good, it's just the things that happen from what people do with it. It only works small groups mostly (tribes and families), so I think it's a little unfair to say Socialism = FAIL, because it doesn't. The idea is great, what happens is kind of bad (greedy bastards!

Lol, thats what they all say. I agree the idea of socialism is AWESOME but it relies on everyone putting forth their best all the time and never caring if someone else isn't as good as them. There is no reward for doing good and no punishment for doing bad, at least individually.

back to the original post, would you not consider the students a small tribe?
they may be students, but they will be the ones leading this country one day.
think about that for a moment.

crusty have u ever been to other countries?
Americans can complain about how crappy the US is right now, but if u compare it to the rest of the world we have it pretty damn good.

sure its not as good as it used to be but its still way better than many other countries in the world.

Actually deadly it's pretty bad here right now. It's gonna get alot worse if the economy keeps going down (but it's not so don't worry!

) and Noah I wouldn't consider a bunch of students a small tribe because they haven't lived together and depended on eachother. Tribes live together for their whole lives and depend on eachother to save their lives, hunt, and just be a family. So yeah...

Exactly. The Chinese government's slackening of its grip on the Chinese economy coincides perfectly with its explosion as an economic power.

Time after time history has revealed an obvious correlation between the amount of economic freedom in a country and its standard of living.

okay, that is definitely fair. i worded that poorly lol.
"tribes" do depend on each other for survival. this is true. at this point, i'm not exactly sure how we got on the subject of tribes though lol. if you really want to dwell into that, shit. socialism has survived for longer than i care to google. of course it works!

we're talking about a country though. a pretty significant one, i might add.
a country that deals with unemployment, disability, bankruptcy, poverty, etc. on a daily basis. no doubt times are hard. if anyone expects our entire country to pull together and work our asses off for no real benefits, you are mistaken. it won't happen.

i've posted this before, and it's a little embarrassing, but i dropped out of high school. i spent most of my teenage life doing drugs. not proud of it, but i'm willing to talk about my past. at 23, i've held my current job for 3 years and i bust my ass every day to keep it going. it's manual labor. it's production. people don't really NEED my product, but god bless em. the rich buy it. i don't really have a choice, but i enjoy manual labor, as crazy as that may sound lol. my work days go fast and i stay fit. like i said though, with the economy the way it is, i'm never certain that i'll be working 6 months from now.

with that said, we've cut about 1/3 of our staff a couple months ago. and STILL, half the people i work with don't give a shit. they pass defective product, they sneak into the bathroom to avoid working, and they tattle on other employees because they get off on it. it's fucking sad. i could count on one hand how many people i work with actually give a shit about our job. everyone else just says "oh well, i'll just collect unemployment for half a year."

yeah, that's nice. you're able to work, and yet you'd rather soak your couch.
these are the kinds of people we'd be supporting if socialism happened. of course, we have people who are physically and mentally unable to do the work. my daughter being one of them. i have no problem whatsoever supporting the handicapped, but most people in this country are just fucking lazy, as far as i'm concerned.
