Even more important than the inefficiency is the lack of liberty under socialism. Liberty and economic equality cannot coexist. Personally, I value liberty over everything else.

I don't see this as much as a Socialism fail, as I see it as a human nature fail.
It goes to show that people will only go as far as they need to, and some won't even go that far. Socialism will fail when people stop holding up their own end of the bargain, kind of like society. You can't help people that don't help themselves.
Good story, by the way!

Socialism is built on the assumption that that human flaw doesn't exist, hence both are faulty.

I don't know about that... I'd say that it's more that socialism believes humans can overcome their flaws to make everyone's lives better. That's where it's flawed.
I really think all this teacher's experiment shows is that socialism can't be forced on a society.
If we could just overcome our flaws so easily wouldnt that remove the damage done by our flaws ( Sort of making us 'flawless' in a round-about way). What I'm sayin is i think you and Boobie are saying the same thing.
And as to what the experiement shows, Raine is mostly right but i think even if socialism is taken on willingly it will digress into what Evol mentioned.

Wasn't it the students who had the belief in socialism? When I read it, I didn't get the notion it was forced upon them.

I got the same impression. Which I find amusing if that is the case - history shows socialism doesn't work and yet we think we can somehow be not fail where others have failed previously. Just like some think socialism works.
Oh what a tangled web we weave......

Unattributed Quote:
The class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said ok, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism.
this makes me think that the students went on and on, raving about how glorious socialism would be, and the teacher said "frick it. let's do this." jen found this on her friend's facebook, so the original source is unknown. i do believe the students welcomed this idea with arms wide open, however. i just get that impression, regardless of who's idea it was, exactly.
i don't believe this experiment was forced upon them. maybe they had no idea how seriously it would be taken, and maybe failing the entire class might have been a tad harsh on the teacher's part, but you live and learn.
you could always say "well, these are students. not adults. not the government" and you'd be right, of course, but i still think this experiment was valid. just take a look at where we're at in this day and age. we have a remote to change the channel, drive thru's, clap on/clap off, etc. the world as we know it has been getting lazier throughout time. i don't enjoy saying that, but i believe it to be true. just my opinion. as it stands, i can't imagine socialism ever working. EVER.
some of these points might be a little off topic, but i think it all laces together.

By the way, China isn't failing too badly is it (I'm not sure if it still exists, I hope)? Cuba isn't either (except for the hurricanes lol).
