Midnight in Paris - 4.5/5 (Full Price)
Now this was a very enjoyable movie. After all the standard movies that get released, seeing one like this is very refreshing. It's all dialogue, so some might find that boring, but the movie is immensely entertaining. The movie features lots of references to writers and artists of the 1920s, so if you aren't familiar with classic art and literature, you may miss many of the jokes in the movie as well as find it not as enjoyable, since you don't know who the characters are (since a few of these literary figures are actually main characters). But overall, if you feel like a refreshing change of pace from you normal, drab Hollywood action film (or if you just like good acting, a great script, and an interesting love story), this is a great movie to see.
There Will Be Blood - 3.5/5 (High Matinee)
I went into this with really high expectations, and I believe that may be why I didn't like this nearly as much as the rest of the world did. I agree that Daniel Day-Lewis' performance was phenomenal, one of the best I've seen in years. I wasn't really in the story however. I didn't feel like I could connect with Daniel, and there weren't really any other main characters to connect with, which left me rather cold throughout the movie. I think the main thing that kept me from liking this movie was that everybody seemed to compare it to No Country for Old Men, and that is one of my favorite films ever, and I didn't feel this movie came anywhere near to the quality that No Country had (except for acting, although I still believe Javier Bardem did a better job than Daniel Day-Lewis). On the bright side, the score is fantastic (I would expect it from a member of Radiohead), and so is the camera work. The movie has a very clear atmosphere, and that adds to the overall feeling of the movie.
I also didn't like the ending. Won't get into for spoiler reasons, but it just didn't seem to fit.
