Definitely not. Would just add gas to the fire so to speak and get a little war started with each others posts from that point forward.

well, atleast then we could figure out whos rating a post and see if they rated it fairly or not. cause if someone gave it a + rating and it was a stupid post, then wed know they rated unfairly. and if it was an on-topic and helpful post, but had negative ratings, then wed know it was rated unfairly and wed know who did it...

or heres another idea. you have to give a reason why youre rating a post the way you rate it. for example, if you gave it a +1 be like "oh it was helpful and on topic, etc etc" and if a -1 "oh it was stupid and off-topic, etc" naww mean?

I have to agree with Golden on this one. To be fair to everyone if the ratings are anonymous it keeps away the trolls and keeps the gas away from the flames that are always present with an online forum community. One little spit of gas and this whole place would explode.

i agree.
i also agree with shock. i don't care for it one bit.
the +1 means nothing... and the -1 is for reporting spam.
i say get rid of the system and just have an option to report a post.
other forums do this, and even if just one post or thread gets reported it gets checked out. this would eliminate enemies hating on enemies because the mods would obviously be able to see why something is reported, regardless of how many people report it. in that case it's a no brainer what the motive is.

i don't really feel like proofreading so i hope that makes sense lol.

hmmm....ok, that does make some good points melissa. maybe make it so the mods can see it tho? that way they can moderate it and judge it fairly or not (and by judge it i mean go w/ the rate-n-reason idea, where youd rate it and give a reason why) or just do the whole report post thing...that works too

but of course, i feel w/ all this commotion going around lately, i felt i should use this picture...

Sorry for bumping such an old thread but I feel like this addition has caused more trouble than has cleared up. People negatively rate those they have personal vendettas against and positively back up their friends. These ratings have caused drama and started quarrels. They are not properly used and I doubt with the negative ratings running rampant, for post that are not even out of line other than a personal disagreement, it serves much help with moderation purposes. After giving it time I feel like the ability to rate post should be removed. This is just my two cents and thanks for your time.

And yes, if you look *(edit) on the first page of this thread* you'll see me approving of this addition a few months back. I'm willing to eat my own words. :)

get rid of the post ratings.
incorporate a report method.

if a post gets reported by ONE person it's likely the reporter doesn't like said person. if it gets reported by MULTIPLE people it's probably spam/flaming. it works on every other forum i've ever been to. filters out the nonsense very nicely.

Features like this only work if it is not abused. Saying this will not work is saying that the people on this site are not mature enough to use it the way it is intended. That is a statement I can agree with for the most part, but this feature is obviously here to stay so the argument is moot.

What we should be doing is buying into the idea and letting the mature posters out-weigh the trolls and poor sports. Eventually 2 or 3 people abusing the system will be buried under the weight of the 50 posters that rate sincerely.
