Did anyone ever have a permanent towel trick ?
04/17/09 12:11 pm | #1
My xbox died yesterday (April 16) when i came home, but it was fine in the morning so ....idk but anyway i called up Microsoft and im under warranty and free repair. BUT i did the towel trick 5 minutes ago and..IT WORKED. I haven't played yet but i turned it on right after and it turned on no e74. But what i wanted to know if anyone did this is how long it would work because what i hear is that it is not permanent, and if it did work for people how long it lasted because i can still send it in to Microsoft for a free repair but if it does work then ill just wait.

Maybe someone has had a good fix. But knowing what i know about 360 hardware. I doubt it. Towel tricks only last about a week, until you have to do them again

It didn't even work a week for me when I did it. It worked maybe an hour before it copped out again.

Same with me when I had my first 360. I think it lasted shorter than 1 hour actually. More like 30 minutes. The whole process of sending it in to MS and than getting it back only took me about 12 days, but I guess it's different with everyone.
after my 10th one i got it back 6 days from when i sent it in so just keep on burning those puppies out and you'll get "preferred treatment".

The towel trick voids warranty. Have fun with that one.

What Raine said. If it's under warranty, why not send it in? It took me a month to send it out, get it fixed, and returned. Surely you could last that long without your 360, and having one that should last at least a year would be worth it.

sadly, i could not last 1 month without the 360. i'd have withdrawals and start a $500.00 a week cocaine habit to fill the void.

Towelling my E74 console usually seems to last 3-7 days of heavy playing before getting scan line errors or another E74, but since the last time I did it I have been playing more games on my other one and mainly using the old box for DVDs and the occasional music game, and it has been over a month now, so just maybe...
But yeah, if it IS under warranty, don't risk it.
The "towel trick" usually just re-flows solder that has gone brittle and cracked on the board, so getting the console hot enough has a chance of regaining some connections, but there's also the chance of frying your board beyond repair AND voiding your warranty.

ALSO i have an elite and i hve had for about a year and.....2 months? should it even be breaking? i mean arnt elites supposed to be unbreakable especially after 08 (i got mine christmas of 08) because my friend said those have a different chip in them or something?

nah, no different chip. all current xbox 360's use the same chip (Falcon?). the difference between the present xbox 360 elite and other 360's is...... the color black. the elite was the first 360 to have hdmi output and 120gb hdd but now all present 360's come with hdmi and you can buy the 120 gb hdd so really it's just the color that distinguishes itself.
