Xbox Dashboard Update Now Live
News | April 6, 2010 4:07 pm
Well folks, for those of you wondering what was happening with your 360 today, an auto update for the dashboard went live this morning. The update, announced last month, brings support for using USB memory sticks as memory cards. There are no other fixes that I can tell, other than that support. While I have received the update, I have not personally tried it yet, but from what I understand when you connect your flash drive to the 360, if you wish to use it as a memory card to store gamer profiles, saves, etc, you will be required to format it (i.e. erase everything) with the 360 file system.
Flash drives need to be at least 1GB in size, and can be as large as 16GB; while support for something like an external USB hard drive or a flash drive larger than 16GB has been hinted at, only 16 GB of said hard drive will be usable. You are also able to use up to two flash drives at once on one console, for a grand total of up to 32GB of extended storage. Also, when deciding what size flash drive to use, keep in mind that when you format it the 360 File System does use 512MB for system information (meaning that using a 1GB flash drive will only have approximately 488MB of free space to store games and data).
Microsoft has also partnered with Sandisk in order to release Xbox 360 branded flash drives. These drives will be preconfigured to work with the 360 out of the box, meaning no formatting, and will come in 8GB and 16GB sizes, retailing for around $34.99 and $69.99, respectively. Anyone with an eye for this sort of thing will know that this is a good price for a flash drive of this size...when they were released seven years ago. A walk through Best Buy can get you a 16GB flash drive for under $40 if on sale, and some web searching could get you one even cheaper. In order to soften the blow, the drives will also come with 1 month of Xbox Live gold.
All of your data will be transferable to any USB device you choose, except for installed games: Games will need to be re-installed directly to the USB device. Games installed on the USB device will function the same as games installed on the hard drive, meaning you will need the disc in the tray on start up. Well, there you have it, some info to try and keep you in the know. What are you using your USB drive for, if anything?

i can see microsoft putting code in the memory cards, to allow them to see potential modders and hackers trying to get games to work and all.
All in all, I have a 120GB, and a 250GB here, so i am good for a while, however, I do have a 1GB USB Stick, and may use that to carry my profile around never miss an oppurtunity to achieve lol

From what I gathered a month ago, Durtie, it is a limit of 2 USB drives period. I would assume that 2 1GB sticks would be it.

While I cannot confirm or deny at the moment, it wouldn't make any sense to lock you out to the first two memory sticks you plug into your 360, since one of the main selling points of this feature is bringing games and profiles with you. I believe its a limit of 2 memory sticks plugged into the console at a time, meaning if I have two 16GB memory sticks in the front USB ports, and I try to plug a 1GB memory stick into the oft-forgotten USB port in the back of the console, the console will not access the 1GB drive until I remove one of the 16GB drives.

Yeah it just means you can only have 2 configured USB story units in use at once, you can format and use as many different devices as you want.

Right now im testing it on my 8gb flash drive an it seems to be going very well ive actually filled it up and creating space for any new games i get. But quick question, If i were to install a game on my flash drive would i be able to use it on another 360 console?

No, when you install a game to your HDD, or USB memory, it also "registers" it to that console specifically. It's kind of weird.
Not only will you not be able to use that same install and move the HDD or USB to another console to play, but say your friend has a USB with a game installed, and you had that game installed on your HDD, well if you plugged in his USB you still couldn't play the game, even though you had it installed before.
It synchs up the specific installation between the HDD/memory unit and the console.
