If you bought this game for PS3, you get Saints Row 2 for free. Which is good for me because I sold my Saints Row 2 to pay on the 3rd one.

I am about 5 hours in to the game, having done mostly the main story missions and just small amount of side activities and just generally screwing around.
The customization is great. I never got to play Saints Row 2 but I heard it had massive amounts of customization & item varieties--from what I gather, The Third streamlines this down by removing redundancies & too-similar items and adding upgrades.
There is a lot of wacky shit in the game but I have been pleasantly surprised by how tight the actual gameplay is once you dial-in the sensitivity settings and find which gun types work best in different situations.
The humor is both over-the-top lollerskates and genuinely funny depending on what the game has you doing.
If you liked GTA4 or previous Saints games or are on the fence, go ahead and give this one a rental at least. It's worth the playing.
