Microsoft Ups the warranty Ante again

Yesterday, Microsoft again upped the ante when it comes to addressing the reliability concerns with the Xbox 360 game console. Effective immediately, the Xbox 360 warranty will be extended to three-years (from purchase date) for general hardware failures indicated by the "ring of death", the three flashing red indicator lights on the front of the console. Any owner who has experienced this issue and had to pay to get their console fixed will be reimbursed within 12 weeks. See the release below for full details, or the Q&A Section at Xbox.com.

REDMOND, Wash. July 5, 2007 Microsoft Corp. today announced that it will expand its global Xbox 360 warranty coverage. Any Xbox 360 customer who experiences a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights will now be covered by a three year warranty from date of purchase. All other existing Xbox 360 warranty policies remain in place.

As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures. Having identified a number of factors which can cause general hardware failures indicated by three red flashing lights on the console, Microsoft has made improvements to the console and is enhancing its Xbox 360 warranty policy for existing and new customers.

Microsoft stands behind its products and is taking responsibility to repair or replace any Xbox 360 console that experiences the three flashing red lights error message within three years from time of purchase free of charge, including shipping costs. Microsoft will take a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion pre-tax charge to earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2007 for anticipated costs under its current and enhanced Xbox 360 policies.

The majority of Xbox 360 owners are having a great experience with their console and have from day one. But, this problem has caused frustration for some of our customers and for that, we sincerely apologize, said Robbie Bach, president of Microsofts Entertainment & Devices Division. We value our community tremendously and look at this as an investment in our customer base. We look forward to great things to come.

For any customer who has previously paid for repair expenses related to the three flashing lights error message on the Xbox 360 console, Microsoft will retroactively reimburse them.

That is really cool. Microsoft could have hung us all out to dry, but they didn't. My 360 is approaching two years, and I've been starting to get worried.

hey if you see red lines or dots all over the screen when you are playing a game then you know there is something wrong(but nothing to bad)

I can't seem to find a definitive answer to whether or not I will get a refund of my Warranty Payment I made to extend it?

Did they mention that for those of us who already paid to extend our warranty through MS, we would get a refund or anything? I may have to call Microsoft and check.

Thank God. Ok, I am finally going to send my box in now instead of saving up to buy a new one. Now I have never had the Ring of Death, but I can't play a game without my xbox freezing after 5 minutes. Does that justify sending it in?

Then it is probaly getting ready to brake. mine had red lines on the T.V. it is worth a try!

I would just send it in anyways and claim you got the three red lights. I don't think the warranty covers it if you didn't get the lights, but if you send it in saying you got them, you might luck out.

no they wont take it they ask like 1 million q's and if they think it is really busted then they well take it!!

Freezing and the bad screen image (lines and red dots) were the reason my last one was sent in. However, I bought the 2-yar warranty, so I was covered.

Probably cause they messed up everything with all these xboxs failing witch is costing them 1 billion dollars but its still cool that its 3 years now
