Microsoft Addresses XBLA delisting concerns

News | May 27, 2008 12:17 pm
In response to the questions that arose from a Next-Gen interview with Marc Whitten (where Whitten announced that XBLA titles would be delisted), Chris Paladino at Gamerscoreblog has posted a Q&A about the whole delisting process. This seems to explain what the selection process will entail, and also answer some of the questions that are being asked such such as how do I re-download a delisted title. What is does not address are exactly what titles are in danger of getting the ziggy. See the entire Q&A below:

We've upped the XBLA size limit from 150mb to 350mb.

We've stated that underperforming games on XBLA may be delisted. To be delisted, a game has to meet all three of the following criteria:

-Been on the service for at least 6 months
-Have less than a 65 Metacritic rating
-Have a conversion rate of less than 6%

Now, let's get into your delisting questions:

Q: What's "conversion rate"?
A: When people download a trial XBLA game, and then purchase that game, that's called a conversion. So if less than 6% of all trials downloaded lead to full game purchases - that's one of the 3 criteria we look at when deciding to delist a game.

Q: Why are you delisting games?
A: We have a LOT of XBLA titles onto the service. By filtering out the lower performing games, it will actually make it easier to find the games you really want.

Q: If I bought a game, and deleted it, can I redownload it even if it's been delisted?
A: Yes, you can. Go to Download History under the Account Management section of marketplace (far left blade).

Q: Can I still play a game after it's been delisted? What about playing online? What about leaderboards?
A: Yes, yes, and yes. The game will function normally even after being delisted. You can continue to play the game single and multiplayer, as well as use the leaderboards as you normally would.

Actually, if a game is delisted, it is no longer for sale. Only those that previously purchased it can access it again.

If they are keeping up the functionality, why don't they just make a "black list" or something and have the black sheep titles listed separately away from all the new stuff they want to shove down your throat.

It would be really cool if they made the games mad cheap before they delisted them. I'd buy them if they were 200-400 points, even if I knew they were being delisted.

*I just found a list from 360fanboy.com that lists all the XBLA titles meeting the first two criteria (the conversion rate isn't accessible outside of Microsoft). So possible games eligible for delisting could be:

Crystal Quest
Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe
Hardwood Hearts
Texas Hold 'em
Fatal Fury Special
Contra
Marathon: Durandal
Missile Command
Time Pilot
Track & Field
Hardwood Backgammon
Hardwood Spades
Pac-Man
Frogger
Mad Tracks
Root Beer Tapper
Super Contra
Geon: Emotions
Soltrio Solitaire
Arkadian Warriors
TiQal
Rush'n Attack
Defender
Double Dragon
Xevious
Gyruss
Asteroids / Asteroids Deluxe
Battlestar Galactica
Centipede & Millipede
Spyglass Board Games
Tetris Splash
Ecco the Dolphin
Yie Ar Kung-Fu
Wing Commander Arena
Novadrome
Shrek-N-Roll
Scramble
Tempest
Street Trace: NYC
Word Puzzle
New Rally-X
Cyberball 2072
Screwjumper!

Out of all of those games, I would probably only grab Fatal Fury if they were really delisting it, and even if I didn't it wouldn't really bother me.

I heard about this on the Giant Bomb podcast and from what they said people will still be able to buy them, they will just have to be refered to the game.

But that list seems full of crap any way. The only ones I would like out of that is Geon: Emotions and Marathon: Durandal otherwise I'm fine.
