Prepare to die: Super Time Force review!
It's a difficult concept to write about that doesn't sounds like much fun until you actually see it in action. A boss may normally take 30 seconds to beat, so I fight him with my character as far as I can and then rewind and spawn a 2nd character. Now that same boss will only take 15 seconds to beat, and from what I could tell you could have had all 30 lives or characters on screen at one time to help you run through the levels with ease.
This is what I mean by having multiple characters on screen at a time via the rewind feature.
You are going to die, a lot, and its encouraged in the time rewind feature. You can rewind without dying by hitting the B button, but where's the fun in that? It's fun to see how far you can get with a character before you meet your untimely, but inevitable demise. Super Time Force encourages using different characters depending on the situations, characters like Jean Rambois have a scatter shot, while Jef Leopard has a bazooka shot that hits with major splash damage. The game isn't particularly hard until you get to the final stages, which ramps the difficulty up out of nowhere. It was the first time I ran out of lives and if it wasn't a digital only game I would of traded it in due to the shame.
You start off with a set amount of time per level, and there are pickups that can add or slow down time to help you advance through the stages faster, but can be out of the way sometime. It becomes advantageous to have a character go out of the way, rewind to a point prior to the picking it up, and continue to the end of the level with the extra time. Anything other versions of you pick up counts towards the level as a whole. It's really about trying new and different strategies to get through the levels, and allowing exploration for collectibles without any penaly since you can always rewind to a previous point in the level.
The story for the game doesn't make much sense, and honestly was pretty lackluster. The game takes place in the 1980's with the discovery of time travel and just moments after its discovery the world is attacked, the super time force comes from the future to save the world from being destroyed, and thus starts the game. You travel to different times in the game, from Atlantis at 9000 B.C., to the dinosaur age, to the crazy future run by a company that suspiciously resembles google.
pewpewpew i'm gonna shoot you lol
The level layout and freedom is similar to a megaman game, there's three levels per time zone, and no set order you have to beat them in aside from the final levels being last. After you beat all the main stages you unlock the last few levels which were pretty difficult compared to the last game, and fight the final boss. Each level zone has 3 to 4 levels with the last one being the main bad guy in the game, just in different situations really. (when is this guy going to learn?) The difficulty seems out of place from the rest of the game, but I guess you don't want the final few levels to be a cake walk as well right?
I should note this isn't a long game, there's 9 total stage area's with 3-4 levels inside. Each level will probably take you 5-10 minutes to beat your first run through, this game is really focused around replay-ability, as when you beat the game you unlock a harder difficulty setting. If you enjoy this style of game there's plenty to come back to, if not it's a game you can beat in a few sessions and be done with. It's a shame really because the game is a lot of fun to play, but there aren't a lot of stages to run through. Once I beat it, I was left with a "that's it?" feeling.
You start the game with 3 characters, but quickly unlock different characters that are pretty unique from each other with how they attack and the different ranges their weapons have. Each character is pretty much a parody, from "Squirty Harry" to Melanie Gibson, some being not as subtle as others. There's a jedi like dude who has to throw his sword, and Shieldy Blockerson who blocks attacks but has no real offense of his own. This really encourages you to try different characters when stuck or unsure how to tackle the different enemies on screen.
The game controls incredibly tight and is super responsive, which is exactly what you want from a side scrolling shooter bullet hell game. The dialogue and story are pretty cringe worthy, with a lot of "lolz" and "kthxbai's" it made me just want to skip the dialogue and actually get back to playing the game. It was an incredibly fun game that quietly has become one of my favorite games to release this year. If your a fan of side scrolling shooters or bullet hell games, this is definitely a game you should purchase.
Pros:
tight controls
rewind feature is awesome
characters look and play differently
interesting level designs and layouts
Cons:
the story is garbage
all text dialogue made me uninterested in what people had to say and was pretty bland
sudden speak in difficulty towards the end doesn't make sense
retro style graphics are becoming a bit overused
Graphics 7.5/10
It's a nice twist on sprite style graphics but this art style has been way overused by indie developers. Let's come up with something original guys.
Sound 8.5/10
The game has a pretty unique and interesting sound to it. It's own of few games I didn't just completely mute when I played it on my tv. Maybe I should play some better games then.
story lol/10
the story is garbage and won't be the reason you play. Here's a brief synopsis "The United States government allows you to travel through time to fix previous mistakes after you saved the world. You travel through time and fuck shit up, the end."
Gameplay 9.5/10
This is the real meat and potatoes of the game. The gameplay elements are fun and the controls are really tight. It can get pretty addictive when your on a roll and fucking shit up.
Achievements 8/10
It's a super easy 815 gamerscore, you barely have to get any collectibles and just replay levels using certain characters or do character specific actions to get this. The other 185 GS is collecticbles and beating a stage under the target time, which isn't hard but it isn't fun either.
Replayability 8/10
It's a fun and addictive game and if your a fan of side scrolling or bullet hell style games it will keep you coming back despite the small amount of levels.
Overall 8/10
I didn't know anything about Super Time Force until it released, and I wasn't sold on it then. I watched a stream of the developers playing on twitch, and that's what sold me on this game. It's one of my favorite games of 2014 and a surprisingly good game.
