MORE PEGS?! - Quickie Peggle 2 Review
Almost exactly like the first Peggle, Peggle 2 is an awesome arcade game available on the Xbox One Marketplace. It's only $11.99... But it's got 1000 gamerscore! If you're not familiar with the Peggle games, think Plinko from The Price is Right. Line up your shot, shoot a little steel ball (hehe, I said ball and steel), try to hit as many pegs as you can for some pointz and keep going until you hit every orange peg for the level.
Here's a quick screenshot of a Peggle 2 level. Blue pegs are just level filler, green pegs are power-ups, and orange pegs are your mission. If you are familiar with the first Peggle, there's only one Peggle Master that was brought over from that game to this one. That would be Bjorn, the Unicorn. Don't worry though, there's some awesome new Peggle Masters with pretty neat power-ups.
Just like the first one, this one is no different (although a few buttons have changed). You aim your shot and hit A. The ball bounces around a while and eventually either falls out of the screen at the bottom or lands in the free ball bucket. If you get the bucket, your shot didn't count and the ball is added back to the 10 you started with. It's very easy to anticipate shots to not waste your balls (hehe) once you understand angles and how much movement you'll get from a bounce off a wall, a peg, and/or the bucket at the bottom.
Much like the first Peggle, 2 has a campaign full of multiple different worlds you make your way through. There's also a type of challenge mode, although in this game they're called Trials (sadly, there isn't a motorcycle). The Trials in this game have nothing on the challenges in the first. I wasn't able to complete some of the DLC challenges from Peggle. But the Trials in 2, are very simple. Once you know which Master to use for certain levels, you'll be flying through these in no time.
The length of the campaign and Trials depends on 50% luck, 40% skill, and 10% how loud you can yell when you fuck up a shot to complete the level or Trial you're working on. This is a game that's definitely all about luck, most people won't like that. But it's the truth. Below is a shot of the new Masters that will help you along your Peggle 2 path. I won't ruin the surprise by telling you what their power-ups do, but I will tell 3 out of 4 of them are awesome.
There is a multiplayer mode, luckily there are no achievements for the core 1000 associated with multiplayer so I did not try this mode at all. I would assume it's much like the first. 4 people are thrown into a level and the one with the highest score at the end of the level is the winner. Most people will be ecstatic there aren't multiplayer achievements. That's not to say there won't be achievements for this mode in the future, who knows what DLC will bring (if there is any on the horizon).
The achievements are VERY EASY. I was able to complete the campaign and Trials mode in about 20 hours for a cool 650+. Completing every level by clearing all the level's objectives will be a giant time waster. After 40 hours I was able to get 800/1000 gamerscore, I believe I'm also only lacking 4 or 5 achievments. Everything I'm lacking is related to level objectives. Evol, since you're wondering, every level has a clear the board of every peg objective and a score related objective. The other objective is usually random and there's a 50/50 chance it'll be hard or not. I got to 60/180 objectives relatively easily (but I do consider myself a fairly decent and lucky Peggler). Definitely expect 500+ for even the most average Peggler.
There was not one single issue I could find with this game and that's saying a lot. I'm always able to complain about something.
Overall I'd give this game a solid 10 out of 10 (for an arcade game). With absolutely no glitches or flaws, great graphics, and just awesome in-game atmosphere I would highly recommend this game to anyone and everyone. Whether you have 5 minutes to play or 5 hours, this game is just fun as hell.
