Quote by Allwayz SinCere:

I must represent a small portion of the XBL Community because I enjoy getting achievements online.... My reward was more than 50 GS and a pic, it was respect (sure some showed it by cussing me out and claiming I had no life) but those who really played Gears knew I went through my trials and made it out on the other side.... Did I hurt a lil inside when I found people glitching Seriously? You damn right I did, pissed me off, but you know what, it can't take anything away from me unless I let it. So for me, Achievements never lost value, it's quite the opposite, it just puts me and others who put time/energy/money into gaming in a smaller yet more exclusive club.

Well said, and actually I do agree. I think any game that obviously places importance on the multiplayer aspect has every right to have online Achievements, and even something as tough and grueling as "Seriously..." has its place. As you said, it's not just a trophy, it represents dedication to what you enjoy as well as honing your craft (btw, that's an awesome way to put it).

I think online Achievements have their place, and it's actually really cool that some games with devoted followings have that one really tough Achievement that only the dedicated get (until glitchers & savers get their paws on it), I just think that it should only represent 10% or less of the game's total Gamerscore/Achievement content. Well, actually that's a prety arbitrary figure, but my point is that the working-class old fart gamers who only have 1 or 2 hours a night to hit buttons should be able to attain/complete/unlock about 90% of their games' Achievements with reasonable time & effort. I think it's fine and actually pretty neat if the other 10% represents, for the most part, that smaller percentage of the community that is either very devoted to the specific title or just like to really push themselves and their skill to grab 'elite trophies' of sorts.
Re: Editorial: Has the Achievement bubble burst?
Thank you Deadly, and I doubt i could do it again, as I'll more than likely be in Iraq come this Nov. 2 but when I get back I'll give it a run. (not solider, civilian army personnel) Alas, there will always be cheaters, so-called racists, and just overall bad sports on Live. I feel like we're moving in the right direction by creating sites like this one and so many others where people of all ages but not maturity levels can get together and make gaming what it once was and occasionally still is, fun.

I really feel like I should put in while I love online achievements, Call Of Duty 4 has surpassed all my expectations for an online shooter and is the absolute best example of how to enrich and lengthen the experience without achievements. Even I was a little put back by the lack of online achieves, but 4 prestiges later, I'm still coming back for more, so maybe there's hope for me yet.

I am sure someone probably said this... but COD4 has great achievements... not a single online one. I like the whole, earn stuff in multiplayer, but play the single player game for achievements. As soon as online becomes a factor, it makes it a bit tedious for something, or just ridiculously easy.

Ok, I was not a member when this was current but I love this subject and I would love to put in my 2 cents about it!

First of all Zoboa, great article!

Now... I had an atari 2600-no achievements. NES, super NES, sega, N64, ps1, ps2, xbox-no achievements. And when I got my 360, at first I didn't know/care about them. I would be playing my 360 without achievements but they are there like it or not.

I know for a fact that I am not the only one that has taken my gaming to a new level because of this "arbitrary" point system. I derive satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment from unlocking an achievement. The same sense of achievement that I felt when I beat mario bros. back in the day. I played those games without anything popping up on the screen telling me that I did something special.

I play games because I am a gamer. When people say that achievements mean nothing then I shake my head and wonder why do they play at all. Maybe the points don't mean anything, but without points there is only the satisfaction that would and should be there for simply doing what we, as gamers, would be doing anyway. Oh wait, that is exactly what a gamerscore represents!

I can afford to buy a ps3, yet choose not to. I love this "arbitrary" system of points that microsoft has bestowed upon us. I didn't ask for it, I would've played anyway. But it's there, and now that I've been exposed to it, I wouldn't have it any other way. Hell, without a gamerscore I would've never gone to this site and met all these great people!!

The one problem with the system is not easy achievements or hard achievements or online or grinders or zero point achievements. No, the willingness of someone who is NOT a gamer to go out of their way to NOT put a disk in their 360 yet still reap the reward that thousands of gamers worked so hard to attain. What satisfaction was derived from that, what does a cheater achieve? nothing. and to me THAT is arbitrary. I would not get on a computer and plug in my NES and have my computer tell everyone that I saved the princess. That is not gaming. But the cheaters have only ruined the system for themselves. As of this post, my gamer score is 27795. Every achievement is absolutely legit. Every point earned with a controller in my hand. I played avatar for two minutes. yes it is cheap and easy and the mark of a true gamerscore whore, but the key word is that I PLAYED it. I didn't glitch or gamesave it. My gamerscore is for myself so cheaters do not impact the sense of accomplishment I have gained from all I have done to raise my score to 27k and beyond. I would have played anyway!

I would like to close with my current xbl profile bio;
Beware the engineers of society, who would have everyone be equal. Opportunity can and must be equal, but achievement must remain individual.

Acheivements have always been in every gamers heart from the begining an never got scrutinzed until it had a score by it. Anyone who had ever flown the plane from island to island in GTA3 just because they heard they could do it (Yeah i did it then too for no reason) or got 120 stars on Mario 64 know what i am talking about. Why did ya do it? It was a grind....just like having a nice gamerscore can be a grind. Ya did it for the pure joy of having completed something unique. There was no glory involved when ya got to the top of the castle but the next time you saw your friend you mentioned it. Now everyone can see that you accomplised that task and makes helping people and bringing gamers together. Many great conversations have started while waiting in lets say the gears multiplayer menu from people looking at my gamerscore and me looking at others. It repersents drive and dedication from that player to either total dominate or go above and beyond in a game. That can only be admired by another true gamer not just you casual gamer. I can sit and play COD4 online all day and acheive nothing if i choose but i got into the next generation with the hopes of sampling all that there is to be offered. Now that the gamerscore is there it does drive me to branch out and try different games i probally wouldnt have tried.

Cheaters can cheat all day without affecting me. You wanna boost simply find the poeple and do it. Grind it out the hard way...? Great! I new mind getting slaughtered by the best (I have played the No. 1 ranked in GOW and it was awesome). The game savers and profile glitchers are some obivious anmore they are insignicant compared to the rest of us. I love to see new people adding to there score and will help anyone that will help themselves. Would i play with no gamerscore? Hell Yeah! Do i play more now with them? Oh Hell Yeah!!! Its the same as setting goals to finshih the bumper on your camero project before the say is done. This is my hobby and i am dedicated to it.

Sites like this one and 360voice are also another driving factor in my game play. The stat tracking is unreal on some of these sites and is a motivation to do well in games or simply play more. Dont really care if im a gamerscore whore or not casue there is enough people like me around to make this interesting. Anyone who plays games in competive period. This offers a new style of competion to the game and really engages most people. If you really cant stand the number by your card get a Wii or PS3. It takes games to sell units now. THe Wii sold there best game with the system and now the 360 has beaten the Wii this month in sales and have crossed the 10 mil mark. Anyone asked themselves if gamerscore is the reason the 360 crushed PS3 in terms of sales of GTA4? Why but the same game for the other system if you own both consoles? Ya get a little extra out of 360 games simply due to acheivements.

Hate it or love it...Take it or leave....Its in the games!
And im sure its not going anywhere!!!!!

Quote by theevol1:

sometimes when a friend gets online, I get mad cuz I was waiting for an achievement!!

Haha dude I get that too. I'll be trying really hard for something then I hear the pop and start to tear off my shirt and run a victory lap around my room but it says "Dumbass420666 is online" so I send them a message like "you asshole, you were supposed to be 20G in Heavy Weapon" and i get a "???" in response, har

I have this one friend that is a Gamestop manager and he is always bitching about how scorewhores are ruining Xbox Live and how noone plays for fun anymore, they just want points. He even keeps saying he refuses to play Avatar on 360, even though he likes the show a lot, because of the easy thousand. First off, I told him that refusing to play it just because of that is philosophically implicating him the same as if he played it for that reason alone. Second off, I looked at his game list and he hasn't completed any games. I don't expect him to have a ton of 1000's, but still, how can people rationally complain about something like score whoring but then have like 150 games on their list and none have more than half score/Achievements?

I said dude, you kept telling me how good Mass Effect was and how it's your favourite game in a long time, why do you not even have 400 in it and you're sitting there playing GTA4 right now even though you said it's not that good and people that play it are dumbasses? He said something weak about how not everyone can be a scorewhore like me, and I told him I got almost 500 in ME without actually trying for any Achievements, and I actually FINISH the games I really like, like Viking, Beowulf, etc. (still gotta finish Conan and Overlord though, so I'm guilty too :( ) Grr, sorry, just pisses me off. I am sick of all these idiot gamers that pay $60 for the newest, hottest thing, then play it for a couple minutes a day for a couple days and then throw it into the pile in favor of the next overhyped title. Gamestop employees are probably the worst, and it's crap like this that has overbloated the games industry. Yes, I understand some people are working 2 jobs and trying to go to school and whatnot so they only have a short time to play games each day, but that leads me to ask WTF they are spending $300 a month buying shit they haven't even played yet?! Maybe you wouldn't have to work so much if you would just buy ONE AT A TIME and finish it or rent the stupid things since you go through them like garbage anyway.

Part of why that pisses me off is that I remember back when I wasn't taking any classes so I worked a ton of extra hours at this decently-paying job I had. I had a ton of money but very little free time. I actually bought like 6 or 7 games in a short period just because I wanted them or they sounded neat, I bought my girlfriend an Xbox and 2 new games for V-day, I even bought a new copy of BG: Dark Alliance just because I couldn't find my manual and my disc was scratched a little bit. But I never had enough time to play! Some games never even got unwrapped.

Fast forward a bit and I am at a different job making less money and barely being able to get any hours, and instead of 6 a month I buy about 1 game every 3 months and just rent everything else, playing until I complete it or get sick of it then flinging it back. Despite being "poor" as far as bloated semi-suburban America standards go, I am way happier this way! It also helps not having a vampiric girlfriend to leech money away. I am pretty sure I would rather have a lot of free time, and barely any money or games, than have a ton of money & games but not enough time to play them. Although I'd need to have a genuine ton of money to test it and be sure.

In better news, Meg, majority and Hektic helped me get 3 tough Achievements last night in Vegas 2, doing terrorist hunts on Realistic difficulty, woooooooooo.
Achievements.

I was gonna actually count how many letters were in that paragraph so I coulda told you what the achievement you just unlocked was for, but since I'm lazy ( like the people who came up with the avatar achievements are) I just want to tell you that your paragraph might be the funniest thing I've read since 5th grade!!! (I learned to read in 9th grade! lol)
