Another topic with no way of ending well.

Editorial | September 8, 2007 12:17 am
Browsing the internet is one of my favorite time wasters. Whether I spend my time posting on random forums or playing stupid flash games, I tend to come across some crazy things. Most of the time, I look for funny things. Sometimes I'm watching old South Park episodes. Other times I'll find myself looking at YouTube to see what random things have been posted. Lately, I've been browsing other video game websites to see if there have been any new rumors and such that have been posted.

After coming home from work, I was browsing some message boards and came across a message that linked to a video game trailer for some new football game. I kinda looked at the message funny because it was supposed to come out in November. I figured it was a typo since most football games are released in July or August, with the exception of games like Arena Football and Blitz.

Then I watched the trailer.

BCF: The Xperience

After a little bit of bewilderment, I began to ask myself how something like this is going to be perceived in the gaming world. Bouncing around some gaming forums, I finally came across this piece over at Destructoid.com.

The comments that follow pretty much sums it up. A series of profanity-laced tirades are rampant, but there are also some half decent points that come up.

This is one of those very touchy subjects that always garners attention, no matter where it's posted, written about, or talked about. However, this shows that the world of gaming isn't immune to this whatsoever. It's a two-way street, and here's your example:

The Village Voice has an article about how a trailer that was released by Capcom shows a white main character shooting black zombies in Resident Evil 5. In the article written by Village Voice, there is a heated argument that pops up in the comments written by users.

So, the question I pose to all of you: Are there truly double standards that seemingly get ignored in the world of gaming or are people just being really stupid and simply trying to find something to argue about?

It truly saddens me that no matter how far we come as human beings, making great stride to change the world, learning impressive knowledge and to make the world safer for each other, people come up with ways to bring us back down to separating us by stupid divides such as the color of your skin or the believe system that you hold dear. No one should be classified outside features but what they say, do, and how they carry themselves.

Well dosnt resident evil 5 take place in africa? I thought thats why they were all black...the virus spreads to another country. I always think that racism is going to exist, its an epidemic that simply can't be stopped. I personally am not racist, period. I work with people that are outside of my race and it has taught me to be respectful to EVERYONE, but still I was not racist from the get-go.

When I was in high school, there was a big war in my grade between the White "southern" guys if you will, the ones who drive the big trucks with confederate flags on them(though they REALLY didnt understand what they were representing and claimed its the south) and wear nuthuggers, and the hip hop african american guys. It was really bad, and while I understood what was going on, I just sat back and thought, wow these guys are idiots. What was so weird was some of them were friends when we were in elementary school. I can't stand racism and wish everyone could get along regardless of race.

Hrm, I've heard about this game and the debate around it. And I've heard the comments from the developers about the game. They said the virus started in Africa, as Syztem said. It starts in the black African population, hence the black zombies. I don't think the RE5 people are trying to be racist at all. Course I myself have been labeled racist because of my dislike of political correctness. I have and have had black friends all my life. I am a military brat. I have been around many types of people. Black, white, asian. Some have tried to see racism in everything someone says, others have been pretty laid back.

Again I do not think the developers of RE5 are trying to send out a bad message. Is this whole white man shooting black zombies any different than a black gangster shooting and killing cops a lot of which are white? There are many other examples. The argument can go both ways. Which is racism which is not? Hard to keep the argument going when it can be turned around on you isn't it?

Course, what do I know. I'm an 18 year old non-voter, and maybe I'm missing the whole point for the upset.
