Well, what a shitty day it's been. I turn my computer on this morning and discover it has a serious virus. Basically, the virus infected/deleted a bunch of random Windows based operations such as opening programs, going to certain controls (change desktop, configurations, etc.), and blocks any attempt of fixing it. When I would try to open a program, it would ask me what to open it with, even if it's just the internet browser, I would have to specify "open the internet browser WITH the internet browser". On top of that, a bunch of programs have been renamed/moved so they won't open and asks me to find it, which when I do try to, it won't let me and blocks me.

Oh, and did I mention that since I can't run a command without specifying where it is, I can't do a "Complete System Restore"?? Now I'm stuck with the virus on there with no way of removing it. The anti-virus program I have (Microsoft Security Essentials) is a jackass and all it does is TELL me that I have the virus, but to do anything, it wants me to PAY for the full version, otherwise it just notes that I have it and won't do anything about it.

Let's continue on with this horrible day. My 360 won't connect to Live no matter what. I have restarted my router/modem 5+ times and have unplugged/replugged both ends of the ethernet cord 10+ times, but no matter what, it won't connect. I turned off every other device in the house that uses internet in hopes of making the signal stronger, still no luck.

Now my question is: inside a 360, is there any component that is responsible for connecting you to Live that may be broken/faulty? My friend suggested that the ethernet port may be broken which I highly doubt since I've only plugged/unplugged the ethernet cord no more than 4-5 times ever since I bought this 360 (FFXIII Console).

The computer issue isn't that big of a deal since I have a friend who may be able to fix it. For the time being, I'll have to borrow my brother's laptop or use the computer at work. The 360 however, I'm really concerned about and hope that someone can give me some insight into it...

Due to obvious restraints, I'll be on XBA less often for now. As for Xbox Live, I'll have to wait and see what the problem is and if I fix it, I'll be on normally like I usually am.

Horrible horrible day :(

While its possible that there is a problem with your 360's network card, it is highly unlikely; a faulty network card in a 360 leads to a red ring and an error on screen. More than likely some settings changed in your router or configuration. Try doing a factory reset on your router, see if that helps.

Start your computer in Safe Mode the virus stops working then. As for the Xbox maybe UPnP is disabled on your router due to the virus? Type your IP address into your browser and look at your router's settings.

Thanks for all the concern/sympathy everyone, makes me feel a bit better lol.

I'll try the safe mode start up today and see if I can go to the complete system restore from there. Because as of right now, starting it up normally, it's gotten to a point where half of my programs and command prompts have been completely re-written or entirely gone. My freaking clock got changed one hour ahead and it won't open up for me to change it back (why the hell would a virus change my clock?). My Firefox browser still opens, but I don't want to use it just in case there is spyware or something on it that may take my personal data. My friend came over yesterday to try fixing it, he used Firefox to search on Yahoo for an anti-virus/malware program, but the virus instantly closes the browser window anytime it detects you trying to find a way to fix it (is this even possible?). I've deleted all my personal data on the computer, deleted all cookies, backed up all my documents and deleted those off the computer also, and pretty much have nothing of interest left on there.

On the brighter side, I figured out what was wrong with my 360. Turns out the ethernet cable I've been using for the past year and a half has become faulty. I moved the 360 to my brother's room last night and plugged in the ethernet cord he uses for his desktop and I connected to Live fine. So now I just need to get another ethernet cord and re-run it through my wall again. Oh well, I'm just very glad that it wasn't the console itself, otherwise I would be pretty upset.

Why world, whyyyyy mee? -__- I miss using my computer and I miss playing on XBL and it's only been a day <__<

Ok, things are finally looking up. I did the safe mode start like Crustyhippy said and it was able to start Windows with the system restore program open, so I was able to restore things. But the thing is, that menu only enabled me to restore it to an earlier point, which the earliest was April 4th. Since the virus just started taking effect yesterday morning, I'm assuming this should be sufficient.

Just to be safe however, what does everyone think I should do at this point? After I restored the computer to an earlier date, everything seems to be running and working fine again, but I'm afraid there may still be traces of a virus on there. So I want to know if I should bother with restoring the whole system? The only thing I would be losing are the few programs I have installed such as AIM, MSN, Video Codecs, Firefox, etc. which I can easily download/install again. All my of documents have already been backed up into a USB flash drive and all of my favorites on Firefox have been deleted but I remember the important sites anyways.

Also, what does everyone suggest for a good (preferably free...?) anti-virus program that I should use from now on? I know SkinsDP537 suggested Avast, I've used that in the past but it was pretty awkward to use, I'm willing to give it another shot however, if it's reliable.

And yeah, luckily it was just the cable on the 360. I found an extra ethernet cable in my room this morning and I'll be re-running the new one tonight.
