So I literally played the beta all day yesterday... First thing I noticed right off the bat, no lag at all. It was like I was playing a LAN game, it was incredible. Headshots were registering instantly with the Longshot, there was no delay on the Torque Bow after releasing it, and shotgun duels felt perfect. I can't say enough about how much dedicated servers make a difference.
The weapon combination I found myself going back to was the Retro Lancer/Sawed-off Shotgun combo. The Retro Lancer has a lot of kick to it, but its incredibly powerful at close to medium range. I also found one of the most fun things to do with it is to throw a smoke at a group, then charge at them with the bayonet out, plow through the smoke and impale someone.
Now to the Sawed-off Shotgun which I believe will be my new favorite weapon. It is so satisfying to kill someone with this thing. What it does is if you are within melee range of someone, yes you do have to be really really close, you can essentially blow them into pieces with just one shot from this thing, and the best part is you can multiple enemies at once with it. One of the best moments I had in the beta so far was on the map Checkout which is a close quarters type map. There was a guy downed inside the electronics store so I went to go destroy him with the sawed-off then two of his friends came fro behind the wall to help him out. I ran up, dodged their sawed-off shots and pulled the trigger and all three of them, yes all three, blew into pieces!
The maps all seem to be very balanced there is not one of the 4 that I played that I don't like, which is very refreshing. They all have their unique qualities to them. Old Town stands out the most at this point, but Thrashball and Checkout are a close second.
All in all I am loving Gears 3 so far, there are a couple issues that I have with it that I'm sure will be worked out but in the one day that I played so far, it has been the most fun I've had playing a Gears of War game, hell any game for that matter, in a very long time.
