Last night I sent an email to OXM with this question;

Do you think it would be wise for gaming companies to split-up games? Let me clarify; some gamers, like me, want to play the whole game while other gamers just want the online multiplayer. For example, 343 studios is about to release Halo 4. What if they were to release two versions - V1 is the whole game, campaign and multiplayer for the normal 1000 points worth of achievements at $60.00; V2 is just the multiplayer at 500 points of achievements for $30.00. I know more than a few gamers that have no interest in single player that this type of game would sell very well with - and I also know that there are others that would buy both versions.

I would also like to hear from everyone here at XBA and what you think.

Stop giving them Bad ideas Mo. You can very much count on them to like the idea of splitting up Story and MP, but it would be more like 40 or 45 each. They would never put either part out for 30....no way!!!

Sort of. ODST was supposed to be a small in between game, not a "normal" retail release.

Included was a disc containing the MP for Halo 3. Which isn't the same as ODST. Part of the reason for doing this was to justify the full price tag for the game. ODST had its own MP in firefight, even though it was a co-op MP. That was on the ODST disc.

So though you are technically right AJ, you're also wrong.

OT: Mo I think in one aspect it's a great idea, but on the other hand there are also plenty of people who don't give a rat's behind about MP. So it could be an option, but I feel that a lot of the developers/publishers feel that $60 is too low a price point to begin with. If we let them do this, they might as well just release two separate games, one SP and the other MP, each have 1k gamerscore and let the people decide if they want both. If they charged no more than $40 a pop for each it could actually work, they'd still get plenty of cash (and more than the $60 if people buy both).

Eh, just a thought.

Edit: TK beat me to it! lol, I agree no way they'd charge just $30 each.

Its not a matter of them making money, its a matter of them making MORE money.

Seriously, up until the past few months the cheapest digital game was $20. Even for games that have been out for years, and even those with broken achievements (I'm looking at you hellboy). What you're saying is a great idea for us as gamers, but anyone in the business who doesn't look at it as a potential to make more money would just be stupid.

while for those people who dont ever touch the campaign ya they would love that. but from a company aspect all those people will still buy the game regardless so if they did that they would be losing money just selling mp on the side.

This just wouldn't make sense cost wise for the companies, and over all would be a mess for marketing and in stores when it's on shelves. Sure gamers who are in the know about what they are buying wouldn't have as hard of a time deciding what version they wanted, but could you imagine casual gamers or parents in this situation? They'd go insane trying to figure out what version of the game their chile would want.

It would literally just be clogging the market with unneeded excess.

The MP version I was speaking of earlier was a downloadable version. It wouldn't be on the shelves at all.
