Quick question, can you play with any number of the same instruments like in the newer guitar heroes? Or do you have to stick to the standard one guitarist, one bassist, etc...I really hope you can mix and match it anyway you want.

I haven't played any MP yet so I can't answer for sure but I'm pretty sure that they didn't add any feature like that. This might be the one area that Harmonix failed to improve. I'm pretty sure they just stuck to the 4 player format and I know for sure they didn't add a 5 player mode to add keys for the MP. I also read that it's not possible to play with a guitar/bass/keys/drums band online.

Actually they sort of did add a 5-player mode, it's called "All instruments mode" and it adds a track for each instrument being used and then vocals are added automatically if it detects "singing". I don't know if it works online, probably not, but it does work locally.
You can't make non-standard bands, though, unlike GH6. Max is 1 of each instrument plus 3 vocalists, with 1 primary and 2 doing harmony parts.
I have to say, I got to the Dio song in a road challenge and was less than a cm away from 5-starring it, but the Antibodies and Saturday Night songs can go to hell.

I've come across a few gems on the RBN.
