That would kill gamefly & gamestop. I really wish they would just officially announce the damn thing to put all the rumors to rest.
I think even when the nextbox is out they're still planning on releasing everything on the 360 but you won't be able to connect to anyone using the nextbox in parties or games.

that would be so stupid if they did that.

It means you're playing a Bethesda game. Hey-oooooo!!!!
a Bethe -what game?
Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, skyrim, oblivion.
Honestly, when I've contacted ms about games freezing they have said it's usually an issue with the game.
If it's happening with more than one game, it may be overheating- and yes this will precede a red ring. And the ring will indeed turn red unless it's a slim. Seems unlikely for a new console, but I guess stranger things could happen.
If it rings, Evol fixes red rings for like $25 plus shipping or something. Cheaper than a new console.

That's why I'm trying to dismiss most of these rumors until the announcement. :/

If this happens, I can see quite a few people jumping ship to Sony or to PC. I personally don't buy a whole lot of new games. Most of my games I get used from Gamestop, Ebay, Amazon or locally off of Craigslist or from friends; or I rent from Blockbuster or Gamefly so if this happens, I don't think I will be playing much anymore. Or I will grab a PS4 because they have already announced that they won't block any used games.

I think everyone in the situation needs to stop talking about the next xbox from out of their respective asses (read website articles, execs, not regular people). Can I see them doing this, yes. Will they now receive holy hell since Sony isn't? Yes. Will we eventually be all digital, sure, but not this coming generation.
You can't just up and change everything in one fell swoop on this kind of stuff. Lets face it there are also family plans, and although I'm sure I'm no where near in the majority, I have an Xbox and so does my son. Several other members of this site have the same situation. Forcing us to buy multiple copies of one game = no new Xbox for me until it's been out a couple years minimum. Then it also means only buying games I absolutely want, and sharing the box with my family, no multiple boxes.
Frankly it would be potentially console suicide for them to eliminate the used market on their system when the other two big ones haven't. And yeah, even if you don't count Nintendo as a big one anymore, Sony hasn't done this. They are going to need to take steps to make that sort of change, and unless they want to start off this next gen console war in last place, the change probably won't be as drastic as everyone thinks.
