I'm shopping around to find the best TV I can afford for gaming/movie use, I'm not that bright when it comes to the tec talk so I was wondering what the best type of TV would be for gaming & movie use.
I have seen like ten different types, LCD,led, plasma & so on, I'm really confused about that stuff and at the risk of sounding like a dumbass, basically just want a TV that has at least 1080p and looks great while I upgrade (currently running a projection dinosaur, like a 35+ beast from the mid 90's).
If anyone could reccomend one or maybe a few links would help a lot.
I was using a "30 inch old-school tube no-HD up until 2011, because I was dirt poor & dirt stupid to producers' who fucked me (metaphorically)
When that shit turned around, I got a Samsung "51 inch plasma, from BestBuy, this is the model:

I paid $900 for it, so with tax, closer to $1000. That model appears to be phasing out, in 2014, but based on other prices, probably runs $750-800, now.
Plasma has deeper dark colors, and the 600hz refresh rate, is good for fast-moving things, like video games. If you go LED, you want the best refresh rate bang-for-buck. Something like 60hz will be noticeable, so you want at least 120hz, on an LED.
My only "oh shit" moment, was being introduced to DEAD PIXELS. On any plasma, or LED, you will always run the risk of dead pixels. It's a lot better now, than it was years ago, that's why going with a better brand, will increase your chances of being safe... you don't want to pay $2000k for something, and have a dead black pixel in the center of your screen... especially if you sit up close, for video gaming...
I say this because in my Samsung situation, after you turn it on for the first time, any LED or Plasma has a "new" period, where the pixels and such get used to being active, that's where you can encounter problems... I think the first 100 hours. I ended up having a few dead (black) pixels, after a few months of heavy gaming... actually just one, and I used a youTUBE "fix dead pixel" link, to flash colors rapidly on my TV, to "fix" it, ended up added two more "dead" ones. Dead pixels are black, if the pixel is purple (in my case, for one), it's "stuck", and will likely fix itself.
DO NOT do what the internet says, and "tap a pen-point to your screen, on the dead pixel". That is outdated information.
In my case, even with the dead pixel... after a month of more gaming, every bad pixel was restored through normal use. Very happy to say that that Samsung model, (I game like 5 feet from the screen, I'd notice), has no bad pixels at all... great colors, refresh rate for FPS, etc. I also have no external speakers, and the sound quality on it is great. I did tinker / adjust settings on it, but it's nothing you can't do, too. The original settings are a bit dark- so I up'd everything.
All in all, that's my two-cents on my similar experience, to yours. I would definitely recommend that model, most people would tell you to go LED, I only went plasma because of the deal at the time... and it's served me well the last few years.
