Playstation 3 Problem (yes I know this is XBA)

First and foremost let me say hello to all the fine ladies and gentlemen of XBA, it has been quite a while since I have been on here due to the little one (and the new one on the way) I am also getting ready to move to Chicago, so you can imagine how busy I have been. This is my attempt to become more active within the XBA Community, if you will have me back *wink*

I do pose a problem that I hope one of you PS3er's can help me with. I have the 320GB Slim PS3 that came bundled with the Uncharted 3 game. I bought it in March of 2012. I have been having a problem with it not turning on, the red standby light will not even light up red. At first I thought it might have been the power cord. I have gone through two new ones already but the Playstation still comes to a point where if I unplug it, then try to plug it back in, the red standby light will not even light up.

The last time this happened I was watching a DVD for probably about 20 minutes when all of a sudden it just shut itself off, almost like someone unplugged it, but it was still fully plugged in.

So that is my dilemma. For those that do not know, the Slim PS3's do not have a switch on the back. I also do not have the receipt as it got lost with a move that I had, coming back home from MS where I was working when I bought the PS3. Also, I know 360 is superior so let's leave out those remarks. I only bought the PS3 to watch my blu rays and play a select amount of PS3 games.

So with all that said, I hope someone can help me.

Right now we are still in Tennessee, but all of us will be moving to Chicago. I have to be up there on the 2nd of January, my wife and kidS will be there sometime in April once the new one is born.

Have you called Sony or PS? It should still have a warranty on it. Maybe you can get a new PS3 out of the deal.

Glad to see you back! Don't get me started on the scumbag ps3. I wanted to play Heavy Rain so badly last night, but all the ps3 wanted to do was lock up on me.

Having said that, Sony is actually pretty helpful at troubleshooting the problems. I was very surprised at the amount of time and attention that a call center rep put into helping resolve a connectivity issue that we had.

I doubt there's very much to troubleshoot regarding your issue, but Sony may be able to assist with a warranty issue (maybe by serial number, since there's not a store receipt).

First of all, is your PS3 plugged directly into the wall, or do you have a surge protector or extension cord?

Second, does your fan ramp up and get louder at all?

There are two reasons for immediate shutdown. One is overheating, but that is unlikely here because even in emergency shutdown, you would probably get a warning screen and a flashing red light when it shuts off.

The second is if the power supply goes into OCP. (Over Current Protection) That is controlled by a potentiometer in the PSU. You can turn down the resistance, but that will just bypass the safety setting, not actually fix the issue. It's probably a weak component in the PSU and you will probably eventually have to replace the PSU. I looked for about 3 minutes and they seem to cost about $50-70.

Anyone who complains about the 360's huge, ugly, bulky power brick can thank microsoft for making them like that so we can just buy a $15 PSU instead of a $60 PSU that forces you to take your console apart when you experience a power problem! VIVA LA XBOX!! lol

The PS3 is plugged directly into the wall. Also, the PS3 makes no noise at all when it would boot up, it would just boot up normally and run like normal until I unplugged it. Then I couldn't even get the red standby light to turn on. But whenever it shut itself off, it just acted like it was unplugged. Just turned right off, while still being fully plugged in.

Indeed.

If your PS3 is less than a year old, (whether or not you have your receipt) contact Sony customer service and they should replace it free of charge. They rarely dick around with repairs and go straight to replacement since the failure rate is so low.

Yeah, from nearly all accounts I've read, Sony's customer service is top notch. There are always a few people who are unsatisfied, but I'd say about 90% was positive feedback.
