I was researching a project and came up with an idea. It is similar to kickstarter, but different.

The idea spawned when i learned the Ryse son of Rome sequel was canceled. The majority of people hate games or TV shows be canceled.

The Idea itself would to create a site, or even host it on this one, just for games in general. For example we would make a list of canceled games that we want back.

We the players would donate money into a fund to buy the rights to the game, or to pay the company just so they can make it.

A secondary idea is that a lot of gamers are programmers and developers. So if this work on we bought Son of Rome, the players would collaborate and make the sequel ourselves. Then the profits from the game go into the fund for more games, and some into the players who helped contribute to the games development and acquisition.

Also this could work for older games and DLC. Like dragon age 2, the majority of the DLC for that game was canceled. If the players pitched in, we could of made more. Or we could buy the rights to update games, like NHL7 and End war, to unlock glitched achievements for achievement junkies.

This plan may not work, and its just an idea, but if it is possible i want to know if this site is with my on getting canceled games into the hands of players.

I like your idea but I think Kickstarter is as close as it comes. You have to remember how expensive video games are to make and buy.

When THQ went out of business some of their properties sold for millions. Nordic acquired Darksiders, Red Faction, and MX vs ATV for $4.9 million. On the low end, Homefront sold for only $544,218 BUT that is just how much the rights sold for, this doesn't include how much money it will take to make the game after you buy the rights.

I think you'd have a better chance of seeing games that were cancelled if you donate to the companies instead of trying to buy the rights, but in this economy who really wants to donate that kind of money?

I doubt Ryse would even be lucrative as a franchise. (Poor reviews aside) It's main purpose was to move consoles and showcase graphics. It also didn't leave much to go on after it's ending.
Spoiler: Click here to toggle spoiler

The sequel would basically be a generic roman game with a new protagonist. Not a legit continuation.

Games like Legend of Dragoon for example could probably be revived and sell enough copies to double you're investment. Sony certainly has no plans for it.

So in conclusion a "Fan" would need to be really rich and pick something he could make his money back on fast (Not necessarily the kind of games that have such loyal fans in the first place). Defunct franchises that fit the criteria are not as plentiful as you might think.

It is a good idea, but I have to agree that Kickstarter already has most of the logistics done for you in a streamlined and proven manner.

You could start a grassroots push for a specific canceled game or content package and, once you had enough interest generated, do a Kickstarter for it.

If it is a game that was on or aiming for release on 360, Xbox One, original Xbox or Live Arcade, then you could absolutely promote it here and we could set up a specific thread for it and all.

Thanks for all the feedback. If this idea took off i didn't expect it to make money. It was about getting games back, and maybe even servers.

The reason i used Rome is i am following the crytek failures. Even their home-front acquisition is in question since some guy just quit. other games i know of

Alpha protocol
Star wars 1313
etc.

I was basing this idea on the fact that gamers including me whine when games get canceled. So if ever gamer spent 1 dollar a month that would generate 200 million a year. If this happened the Gamers could create a company for us, and maybe start developing our own independent projects

But the idea of using kickstart to help fund a creation of a game if it has money problems is cool.
