I'm sure it's just over heating. It shuts off as if I had hit the power button, no red lights or anything. I'm not sure what color the power supply light is when it turns off, I didn't pay attention to it.
Well if the fan keeps running and it doesn't stop abruptly like the power was cut, the it is unlikely that your PSU (Power Supply Unit) is bad. It's just the thing you said about the console being fine on the dashboard, but not while running a game. Your 360 uses ~140-145 watts on the Dash and other low function processes, but can amp up to ~165 watts while driving games and using online capabilities.
So that's why you should check your power brick first before pointing a finger at the console! After that, we can troubleshoot farther!

just try cleaning it out, my buddy was having the same problem but it was because he had his xbox sitting on the carpet witch was causing it to overheat he moved it and it has been fine since
I keep mine horizontal on a wooden entertainment center. I would love to clean it out but I don't have the proper tools to open it all the way.

Look, calm down. Some people are just having fun, it doesn't sound like the issue is an expensive one. I found a "kit" that isn't but a couple bucks that will help you open the XBOX and you can clean the dust out.
If it IS the console, it just gave you a reason to get a slim.....Or even the Gears or Star Wars console.

Thanks Kidd, sorry I'm just frustrated, covered in dust and trying to open a 360 without the proper equipment can lead to cut fingers, etc.

Wow that "kit" is only 29 cents, I might have to get me one since my old elite is crapping out too, started having problems right when this thread came up

Careful with that kit though, a lot of the customer reviews say it isn't the right screwdriver needed to open the 360 and such...

I would prefer to get a new slim but does anyone know how you're supposed to get your files from my hard drive onto the new one? I know about these transfer wires but I'm fuzzy with the details on how they work.

You asked for advice, idiot. You never specified you wanted to fix your xbox.

When you ask for advice be prepared for advice you don't want. Just because someone offers some that isn't to your liking doesn't mean their wrong.
I'll bet you end up either getting a new xbox or fucking the one up you have now AND THEN getting a new xbox.
