to get into ranked matches, I found you have to turn on the Fight Request in Arcade Mode and set it to ranked match, and you will begin to level up when you fight.

They already announced DLC costumes and modes which should drop in the next couple days, and I also wouldn't be surprised if new characters drop when they make Jill and Shumah available for DLC.

I am pretty sure they're going to deliver the goods via $DLC. It's sort-of a win-win for everybody--we get an established-yet-fresh version of the game & additional characters optional, and MvC gets a steady income stream rather than the burst at release date.
