Hardest retail game ever made...

OK, guess what? Nobody has made a thread like this one yet, so I guess I'll start one.

The hardest retail game ever made is "Battletoads" on the NES. If you don't believe me, go look on any top hardest game list, and this one will keep on appearing as #1.

The one game that keeps coming in 2nd is the Ghost and Goblins on NES. (FYI the one on SNES is called Super Ghouls and Ghosts.)

Here are other hard games:

Silver Surfer
Demon Souls
Contra
Shinobi
Ninja Gaiden
Castlevania
Megaman (NES)
Zelda 2
Ikaruga
F- Zero (Game Cube)
Dragon's Lair (NES)

And that's about it. And if you still don't believe Battletoads is #1, you can play it on that website I mentioned in my Gaming challenge thread. But for those not familiar with it, here it is.

I found Mega Man 2 much harder than the original, still do.

Every Ninja Gaiden I've ever played was a beast and a half, I couldn't even finish the first NES one.

Ikaruga is very hard to play well but it's not as hard as some of these others to just play and beat. I can proudly say I've beaten it a few times! Never with 1 coin clear, though--that's just ridiculous.

Ghosts and Goblins is definitely beastly, and it's just "Normal" mode because after you beat it you start all over in an even harder version. That is some brutal nonsense.

Battletoads really is as hard as so many people say. The funniest part is that so many people bitch about that jet level 3, and that should tell you just how hard the game really is--there's an even harder scrolling level later on!

Would you believe I got up to level six with the giant snakes on Battletoads?

well um, achievement wise (360 obviously) Quake and FFXI are the hardest by FAR. i mean, for quake you have to me #1 on EVERY SINGLE LEADER BOARD! and for FF you have to be level 75 in EVERY class, and on and on and on, and its a MMORPG so its almost impossible

EDIT: the site works fine for me. i believe hyper had made a thread with this site in it before. its goo if you like NES. only thing is you cant save games on the site

Wow, I played and beat battletoads back on the NES days, was there more than one?

the hardest game i ever remember playing was "eye of the beholder" for SNES.
it's a first person D&D game.

anyway, you start in a sewer with 4 weak ass dudes (no matter how you roll them), fighting stuff MUCH tougher than all of your guys (who miss almost every attack anyway) and if you want to heal effectively you have to "wait" after the fights. the catch, however, is that you must also keep your guys fed. so "waiting" essentially kills them too.

if you manage to make your way through this maze you end up in a cave with poisonous spiders. you're all still starving to death and taking tons of damage. no shops or anything. i never made it past the cave.

I never made it past the maze. LOL I remember renting it a few months after my first failed attempt and yep my second attempt was just as bad.

i tried that game probably 10 times as a kid.
i think i made it to the caves twice. both times by pure luck if i'm not mistaken.
