For Honor OPEN beta, Feb 9 - 12

If you want to try FOR HONOR before retail release, you get one more chance.

Ubisoft will be hosting an open beta (more likely it's a stress test) from Thursday, February 9th to Sunday the 12th.

To my surprise, Vikings won the war of the closed beta. Also surprising to me was the fact that no matter which faction you choose, you can use any character -- each faction has 3, and you start with 1 from each. I was able to get a new character after a single match.

The game modes are 4v4, 2v2 and 1v1. Note that you can play ANY of the modes cooperatively against AI instead of other people, which is good for training or casual.

I watched Conan's Super Bowl Clueless Gamer segment where he was playing this with Tom Brady, Dwight Freeney, Marshawn Lynch and Gronk. : :laugh:

Note that you can now pre-download the beta and don't have to do anything through the website.

You can find it in the Xbox Store > Games area.

I got lucky in that one Redbox near me still had it Tuesday evening.

Overall, the game is a lot of fun. It is well made with a polished feeling and they did a good job balancing the initial 12 characters/classes. There are a few match-ups that are difficult for certain classes, but this just means you have to think outside the box and use the environment to your advantage.

The campaign is decent but fairly short, mostly serving as an introduction to the combat system and each character type. The story is simple and straight-forward -- the warlord Apollyon gathers an army from the best warriors she can find and sets out to stir up each of the 3 main nations, in order to return them to their previous warlike ways. The campaign is split in to 3 parts, starting with the Knights, then Vikings, then finishing with the Samurai. Initially you are part of Apollyon's Black Legion but as you progress you begin to have second thoughts and end up fighting against them.

There are 4 selectable difficulties that affect xp and rewards earned. The easiest is very forgiving and lets you experience the story quickly, while the hardest removes many UI elements and serves as good training for the game's real content which is in multiplayer.

MP modes include 1v1, 2v2, and 4v4, and all can be played in PvP against people or PvE cooperatively against AI bots. The main focus is in the 4v4 Dominion mode where you fight against 4 heroes and have grunt soldiers all over the battlefield. 1v1 mode is best-of-5 duels, and 2v2 has a couple different modes.

At the outset, you choose which of 3 factions to fight for. This does not limit your battlefield choices, as you can still select and use any character type (for instance, you can fight for the Vikings but still select a Knight to use in fights). As you progress, you earn different gear that alters a few aspects in some modes, as well as new emblems and ornaments to customize your hero. After each battle, you can use earned "war assets" to deploy resources to defend lands you control or attack enemies'. At the end of each session, the winning faction will gain rewards and then the war will start over.

There is a definite learning curve to this game, but the general and advanced tutorials do a great job of teaching the basics, and then there are specific tutorials for each hero type that emphasize their specific strengths and weaknesses.

The main flaws I found with this game are that despite the nice visuals and polished presentation, everything feels a bit generic, and in anything other than 1v1 it is common to get forced in to practically unwinnable situations, especially in 4v4. Another issue is that the connection is peer-to-peer, meaning that 1 of the players in the session is hosting and this can lead to lag and disconnects.

The achievements are pretty stingy, and this game is squarely aimed at folks that are willing to spend a lot of time in multiplayer.

To appreciate For Honor, you really need to play it, as just watching it won't relate how much you might enjoy the combat for yourself.

If Ubisoft is smart, they will get dedicated servers online for the faction war, continue to balance current heroes and add new ones (3 are already on the way for the first major update), and either do frequent freeplay weekends or allow people to download a trial version that lets them play the full game for a limited time.
