Graphics: 5/5
if you are sitting there thinking "WTF Chaind?" the reason it gets a 5/5 is because it keeps to the style of FF. i dont want the graphics better. they're fine the way they are. but this is my opinion. i'll give the "its okay. nothing new" grade of 3/5 if it makes you happy.
Gameplay: 5/5
like the OLD FF series, these titles will take you hundreds of hours to complete. and its proven, on your first try, you WILL NOT get everything. i remember when playing VII i didnt beat Emerald Weapon(this boss made me quit playing VII) nor did i beat Ruby Weapon. these guys are really hard without the right spells. and i beat Sephiroth without Knights of the Round. but the Weapons made Sephiroth look like.....well.....a non-emo guy. i loved the feel for both of the games, it kept the standard turn-based RPG that we've come to know and love(XIII, you need to take a LONG look at it) which is awesome for the PSP. it makes a very enjoyable hand-held. VIII was very good, nearly as good as VII, but had an odd "junction" system that replaced the "Materia" system from VII. i loved the materia system. it was easy and just user-friendly. VIII on the other hand, you're better putting your junction setting to "auto". its best not to mess with it.
Storyline: 5/5
the tradition FF games had a very compelling storyline. long, 100+ hour gameplay. there are millions of things to do without ever hardly any downtime. whether you're getting the GF's in VIII, or the ultimate weapons in VII, you're constantly doing something. VII follows the the line of Cloud Strife, Ex-SOLDIER member(supposedly) as he fights for the planets' life with the renegade group AVALANCHE. along the line you meet the essence of badass, Sephiroth. two of the special characters you can obtain is the "not vampire, vampire" Vincent Valentine and the kinky ninja, Yuffi Kasagari......or something like that. VIII is a bit more dramatic. you follow the story of Squall Leonhart, as a SeeD operative for Balamb Garden(school) who embarks on a quest to save the world from a evil sorceress, Ulticima. along the way, you'll learn why Squall is the loner he is, and meet an interesting cast of characters. Zell, being my personal fav. the GF(Guardian Force) summon system was pretty awesome. you're given 3 to start with, and you hae to find the rest. Odin and Gilgamesh were two of the coolest.
Replay Value: 5/5
when you beat the game, you have to go back. like i said before, you wont get everything your first time. there's just too much. whether you missed a small sidequest to learn something else about a characters past, or you missed a weapon, or well, you missed a Weapon, Ruby or Emerald, or even Ultimate. maybe you missed materia. or a GF. there's always something else.
Price Value: 5/5
you can pick both of these games up for $14.00 on the PS store. $14.00!!!!!!!! thats really cheap! you're basically giving $14.00 for 200+ hours of funtime. the stratagy guides are hard to find these days, but really worthy of picking up. im not sure the value of the guides, but i did see one for $3.00 on ebay.
Overall: 4.9/5
i give it a 4.9 because there's nothing new, but its still great. i loved all aspects of it. but there are its flaws. its so long, you may lose interest for days on end, even though you come back for it. also, there are some "bitch bosses" who make you want to go "WTF???????????????????". they're the best FF games out there, still to this day, even if you want to argue, "but, but Chaind. XIII was a great game. it was a great game Chaind. you can look it up, it's sold more copies. so, you're lying and being biased." all i can say to you is STFU. one little tidbit you missed was that XIII is also one of the most disappointing games for the hardcore FF gamer. people say Versus XIII will be better, and honestly, i agree. please dont bitch about XIII. because no one wants to hear it. this is a review about VII and VIII. i recommend these games to you, because i like them. a lot. some of the most memorable game experience came from these games.
