Completionists Breathe Easy - Achievements won't change that much on XB1
First and foremost, they address the issue about the television related achievements.
Only games will give you Gamerscore.
PHEW! Huge sigh of relief here. It sounds like these 0 point achievements will simply give you access to new features, and/or can be worn as a badge of honor somehow.
On top of this, they explain the whole "time based" achievements, and further describe these new achievements as challenges. Both achievements and challenges can net you other rewards, but ONLY challenges are time based. Achievements can be earned at any time. Here's a little more info about them.
Achievements and challenges are both officially considered Xbox Live Achievements, so they inherit many of the same benefits:
You can unlock them and win their rewards;
Once unlocked, they are saved to your achievement history;
They each have an icon to visualize the cool thing you did;
They often are associated with a Game DVR capture to show your friends that you are better than they are
Developers can release more of them after the game’s initial release (more on that in a bit).
Okay, so not sounding too horrible at the moment, but what about my precious Gamerscore?
Challenges do not give out Gamerscore.
Hallelujah! So hopefully for all of the other completionists out there (I see all 20 of you reading this) some of our favorite sites that track completions will nix these 0 pointers off and consider the game complete when you have the whole Gamerscore (like 360voice already does), or find some way to exclude these achievements from tracking. If not, I'm pretty sure I can live with getting the full Gamerscore from a game and missing out on some (or all) of the 0 point challenges.
Another very interesting note is that achievement tracking can even be done from the dashboard, so no more wondering how many kills you are towards seriously, BOOM right there in your face!
I'm sure this will totally change the way some people look at achievements for games, and honestly I'm curious to see what developers will do with it.
