Surprise: Enslaved. I'm not saying it's one of my favorites but I rented out of desperation for something to play hoping it didn't suck but I really enjoyed it. Great game.

Surprise: F3AR
Disappointment: L.A. Noire
Best game: DiRT 3, I would put this as my surprise, but I knew it was going to be sick, so it wasn't much of a surprise.

Surprise - Red Faction: Armageddon. Hated the red faction series until this game.
Disappointment - Deus Ex. Booty ass cover system. Can't stand having to play either stealth or not. Just let me be gangsta and stroll through with no drama.
Don't have a best game yet. Can't decide. Everything I play, overstays its welcome after a couple of days

surprise - duke nukem forever and warhammer space marine actually releasing lol. all we need now is that alien: colonial marines and half life 3 to release lol.
disappointment: blue dragon, it had all the makings of something great, but using annoying voice actors literally killed it for me, and also showed the decline of the jrpg for the wrpg to become insanely popular!

My biggest disappointment is new releases still costing 60 bucks a pop after what, 6 years? PS2 and Xbox games dropped down in price gradually, why can't the next gen games.

Gears 3 campaign was a huge let down. Such lazy conclusions to the plot holes and full of voiceless, shallow characters. I know they needed to stick you with 3 additional helpers at all times, but giving them no personality or screen time is gay. All it takes to be good online is a turbo controller.

I'm going with Developers for my surprises and disappointments.
Surprises: I'm going to go with Valve on this one. I kind of missed the PC gaming boat, so the first taste of Valve for me was the Orange Box. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love Portal. What gets me is how much I loved Team Fortress 2, lag and all! The Half-life series is so excellent and I haven't even mentioned the L4D games! Also putting out a five part game for $50 is still the best bargain I have enjoyed in all my years of gaming! Bravo Valve!
Disappointments: This is a tie for me personally. First is an easy one. E.A. Need I really say more. Pay to play aside, I feel that the Madden franchise has really grown stagnant. I know, what else can you do and don't mess with success etc. etc. etc. This year's game was not as good as last year's. That just shouldn't happen. What sucks about this is that they have their hand in nearly every game coming out, so if you take a moral stand against their greed, you really end up with slim pickings. Can someone get an anti-trust suit going, please!
Sharing the dubious honors with E.A. is Rockstar. I enjoyed Bully. Before that, I think GTA 3 was the last game by RS that I enjoyed, but that was short lived because my PS2s kept dying! So next gen GTA had me excited, but I got about 3 hours into the story and bogged down on some timed driving mission or something and realized that I never actually liked these games. I simply liked to run around aimlessly and killing indiscriminately. The actual game bores me. RDR was more of the same. I am some bad ass... cattle chaser? I never made it to anything "interesting."
I know a lot of people who will disagree with my assesment of RS, but I won't be swayed. The same as my opinions will unlikely sway any of them.
