It's not pointless. It's information. Some people 'steal' wireless because they figure they won't get busted and they won't get reprimanded for it. But it does happen. I stopped leeching my neighbor's wireless when my dad told me I could get in trouble for it.

The price is a big issue; there is no need for Comcast to charge $40 a month for internet access, when some cities are offering high speed wi-fi for $5-$10 a month. They get away with it because they've monopolized it; Verizon is nice if you can get it in your area, and if you're close enough to get a decent signal. Otherwise, you're screwed with cable. I've always thought they should offer a slower plan for less price.
As for letting people steal wi-fi, yeah, it's all well and good until the feds come knocking on your door because your IP address has been traced to watching kiddie porn or something stupid like that; then you're having a real bad day.
I used to steal wi-fi from my neighbor ::shrugs:: I Just stopped because it was way too unreliable. If I had a solid signal from someone close by, I would probably still get my own just because of my 360. If I didn't have Live and there was a solid signal nearby, then yeah, I would just leech off of it. If you're smart about it you'll probably never get caught; MAC address spoofing is a wonderful thing
