Wireless Moochers Beware

I can't tell you how many times I've read or heard about people 'borrowing' their neighbor's wireless internet connection. (Ninja, I hope you don't mind me mentioning this) Crusified Ninja, you know him you love him, has problems with his neighbors using his wireless connection without his permission. And rightly the police were called. Why? Wireless piracy is illegal. It's a legal offense.

In Alaska back in February a man was arrested for using the free wireless offered by a local library after hours. So beware next time you want to steal your neighbor's wireless. Unless you have permission, it's illegal. And it's even worse if you use a WEP-cracker or WPA-cracker. That is hacking, which is also illegal.

I was guilty of doing this when we moved to Georgia and didn't have internet for a couple of days, it was unprotected and I only used it for a short time to keep my friends updated and letting them know I hadn't died or anything. But that's how I learned about it being illegal, because my dad told me I could get arrested for using someone else's connection without permission. So yeah. I'm not pointing any fingers at anyone, I just want to let people know about it, a few people are/were probably as ignorant of the illegality of it as I was.

if your dumb enough to not password protect your wireless, then you should have some of it stolen

well I had to put a password on mine because the houses next to us would not leave it alone.

I don't think that's necessarily fair to say they deserve to have it stolen. No one deserves to have anything stolen from them. And we aren't just talking about homes, but businesses too. My school doesn't have their wireless password protected, should people who don't attend the school be allowed to use it? No.

I kind of agree with Hockeypuck; as a computer tech who has set up countless wireless networks, 99% of the answers I receive when mentioning wireless password protecting or anything else is "Who cares? If they want to use it they can use it." I also got the same complaint from many administrators in the school department when they had to type a password once to connect to a wireless access point: "Well why do we have to type a password? If someone outside wants to use it, let them."

It's kind of two sides of the fence; you have the people that know about it, know what damage it can do if you have unauthorized people connecting to your network, and take preventive measures to protect it. Then you have the people who don't know about it, or know but don't care about it. It's like going out and leaving your front door wide open; you shouldn't have things stolen from you, but if you're that stupid then you deserve to.

Like I said before, I don't agree with the whole 'deserve to be a victim of theft' thing. But that's just me.
Example: An old lady with memory problems meets a young man at a cafe. He talks to her and builds a relationship with her. He then scams her out of her money. Does the old lady deserve to be scammed out of her money because she's old and senile? No.

Now perhaps that's a poor example, but that's the best I could come up with. I'm slightly high from drugs I ingested for pain.

This is a pointless thread. People on either side of the fence just don't really care. The only instance in which I would even bother calling the police is if 24/7 someone bogged down my line with p2p downloads. Of course I would never steal internet either.. that's just dumb. It's only 30$ a month or less for hi speed.
