Seriously, the boyfriend has issues too. I can speak from personal experience to say that people who are...umm...I'll try to be PC....mentally unstable usually find themselves attracted to other mentally unstable people. The guy seriously might have thought he was doing the right thing by letting her do what she wanted (basically he was her enabler).
Or think of it like this - you sometimes hear about abusive relationships and alcohol being involved, e.g. the husband is a drunk and beats the wife. But she doesn't turn him in because she absorbs the attacks and he doesn't hit the kids and she talks about how good a person he is besides that.
She may not be a "bad" person - but she is obviously not mentally all there - even though that is probably caused by his abuse.
I could imagine someone thinking that letting his girlfriend live away from all the stress of society would be a good thing.
It is a total WTF story and also really sad.
Random side note: I came in third place at a wrestling tournament in Tiffin, OH

It's not just that- it gets to the "what are you going to do?" phase. He wasn't like- some guy she met off the street, they were together for 15 years or something like that- I think the article said. He obviously loved her and thought he was doing what was best for her. Or for them, I don't know. If you don't suffer from any kind of anxiety disorders you really can't imagine the fear that grips you. It gets to the point where some people will physically fight people trying to take them out of their house. Maybe at some point, this guy just didn't know what to do- should he call the police and have her forcibly removed? Could he watch her go through that? Their relationship would be over FO SHO, if he did that.
So he probably just went with it. Day after day, for a number of days he can no longer remember. Every day he would probably hope she'd be better, and every day when she wasn't, he'd hope tomorrow would be the day. He took care of her to the best of his abilities and waited for the woman he fell in love with to return.
Given my circumstances, I'm not going to agree that people with mental illnesses seem to attract only other mentally ill people... >.> However, it does seem to me that if someone has an undiagnosed, untreated mental illness they either are attracted to other people like them or the nurturing enablers... neither one is helpful, as this poor woman clearly has demonstrated. And when they go that far, they don't return on their own... intervention IS needed, no matter what the cost to the people that get them help.
But he has my sympathy as much as she does, because he was just as much a prisoner of her disease as she was.

I guess I also have a broad definition of mental instability - in all fairness I feel people who are attracted to those that are unstable (they think they can change them like a knight in shining armor type deal) are a bit off in their own way - YOU can't make the other person better, you can only offer assistance. Plus I like broad generalizations
No matter how you look at it, this article is sad, very sad, and very very WTF
Hopefully they aren't real harsh on the guy - I'm sure he "deserves" something for not calling sooner, but I don't get the impression that he was trying to do anything wrong.

Everybody but me!
