It was a brisk night on Friday October 24th as I set out from the eastern half of Pennsylvania and headed towards the Big Apple: better known as New York City. The roads were full of twists and turns, tolls, crazy drivers who blew their horns, and even an occasional furry obstacle known as a deer. After what seemed to be an eternity (but really was about 2 hours) I reached my final destination: Brooklyn, New York, and a small shop that resembled a delicatessen from the outside.
From the sidewalk the location I was given appeared to be your normal everyday shop. It wasnt until the doors parted, and I stepped in, that I realized this was in fact the spot I was looking for. After walking in I was greeted by a friendly group of gamers all wearing the Street Fighter Clubs T-shirt and directed to go through a doorway that led to a bigger room (where the actual event was being held). I took one last look back as I hesitantly stepped through the threshold of the outside world, and stepped forth into an underground realm where quarters wouldn\'t ensure your spot in line.
This was a world that operated on a sort of code of honor: where gamers respected one another, and honored the Ive got next mentality of gaming. Everyone seemed pretty respectful, and even said, excuse me or sorry if they gave you a slight push in the wrong direction. As a Pennsylvanian, and human being, it was nice to see that someone could pull off an event that over a hundred people or so attended without any issues arising. My entire time there I didnt even hear anyone trash talk someone else for their lack of gaming ability. But I did hear faint whispers of how SF IV was going to make DC VS. MK look some kind of cruel joke once it was out.
I wanted to ask if I could take this huge wall hanging home with me, but couldn\'t muster up the nerve to ask the Capcom reps : (
This DJ was spinning some of my favorite songs from the old school Hip Hop era like A Tribe Called Quest and Funkdoobiest.
Upstairs gamers got a chance to try out Capcom\'s Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix.
Ryu even made it to the event and demonstrated how to conjure up a fireball.
Some killer urban art could be seen all throughout the upper portions of the building compliments of this guy. Check out some more of this talented artist\'s work below.
The downstairs was where the real action was at. Gamers as far as the eye could see were all huddled around glowing LCD TV\'s and drooling over Street Fighter IV\'s new graphic styling.
At first I didn\'t even know there was a downstairs.....
I can see why everyone had drool hanging from their chins.....
I even got my turn to be in the spotlight (and got my ass handed to me).
Some of the hardworking people who made this event happen....
This guy, going by his nickname: Jwong racked up an amazing 45 straight wins.....
Overall the event was really good, and I\'m glad that I got the invite to attend. It had that underground mystique that hardcore gamers, like myself are looking for, but can never get out of something that\'s usually sponsored in some part by Pepsi.
Also I would like to take some time out and say thanks to the people at Capcom for putting on this event. All the gamers I talked to loved the game, and were really impressed by the graphics and updated combat system. Also a big thumbs up to you guys and gals at Capcom for giving us all the opportunity to play Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, and Street Fighter IV. I look forward to attending more of your events in the future.
I almost forgot to show you the cool grab bag full of goodies I walked away with from this event. Above is a spread of the goodies which includes a Street Fighter Club T-shirt, Street Fighter IV authentic headband, Street Fighter bar of soap, Street Fighter Club poster made for the event, Street Fighter: Dragon Punch energy drink, etched dog tags in remembrance of this momentous occasion, and last but not least, the Street Fighter comic book: which is chuck full of some spectacular penmanship done by a collaboration of talented artist and published by Udon Comics.
