Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
First of all, I've never read the books, so I wasn't for or against the film going in. Anyway, on to the criticism.
Now, I'm still trying to figure out how the film whizzed by the MPAA with a PG rating when it should have easily garnered a PG-13. For example, there's a scene where the three kids-or rather-a 17 year old boy playing a 12 year old, Alpa Chino from Tropic Thunder, and the fine looking chick who clearly isn't a teen-all walk into a CASINO, ingest a flower that gave them a heightened sense of euphoria, hallucinations, and visions of pretty colors (also known as a good trip on ACID ), and start gambling...so yeah. Not really something kids should be doing in a film...for kids.
Anyway, once I got past that, it was a decent film that's basically a re-telling of Greek mythological tales. The acting was nothing spectacular, the same can be said of the writing-story and dialogue, but the special effects were pretty nice. I was especially impressed with the Minotaur. That thing looked badass. I mean visually, the film looked really good.
The portrayal of the modern door to Olympus and the modernization of Greek mythology as a whole was pretty solid. However, I've got to say that Sean Bean has nothing on Liam Neeson as Zeus. As a matter of fact, if I had to choose between the two films, I'd choose Clash of the Titans every time.
Overall, I'd give Percy Jackson and the Olympians 6 Minotaur kicks to the head out of 10.
