If you only played the first game of each, and only for a couple hours, I can understand not getting in to them. ME1 is incredibly slow for the first 10-20 hours, and DS1 was simple and clunky-feeling in a survival horror sort of way.
But for reals, if you only played the first ones, I would strongly suggest you find a way to put time in to ME2 and DS3.

I found Mass Effect incredibly boring. It damn near cured my chronic insomnia & after 10 hours of pointless wandering I gave up. ME3 was alot better and I even finished the campaign. My Fallout 3 experience was the same as Mass Effect 1. I'm sure there's a good game hidden among all the wandering around a non-scenic baron wasteland & pretty clunky controls but I didn't find one. I just don't have the patience for those games so I don't get the same experience from it as the people who do.
